Ja Rule Released From New York Prison After Serving Sentence For Illegal Gun Possession And Tax Evasion

Rapper Ja Rule was released from New York prison Tuesday after serving two years in prison, reports TMZ. He served out his sentence for attempted illegal gun possession and tax evasion.

Ja Rule, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, was released from Ray Brook Federal Prison in New York Tuesday morning. A source close to the rapper informed TMZ that Ja Rule’s wife picked up the artist around 10AM and drove straight home. He will need to remain in confinement until July 28th.

The rapper was hit with a 2-year sentence in 2010 when he plead guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon- which stemmed from a 2007 incident in which cops found a loaded semi-automatic handgun, loaded, in his sports car. He turned himself to authorities in June of 2011.

The following summer, July 2011, Ja Rule was also sentenced to 28 months behind bars on tax evasion charges. He failed to pay taxes on more than $3 million in earnings from 2004-2006. He served the tax evasion sentence concurrently with his gun possession sentence, according to TMZ.

The rapper was scheduled to be released July but got out early.
