K-Pop Mixtape: Songs For Mother's Day

Everyone loves their mother, and K-Pop idols are no exception.
To help celebrate Mother's Day, here are some of the greatest K-Pop songs dedicated to mothers.

“To Mother” - g.o.d

One of the original idol groups, g.o.d debuted with the single “To Mother” in 1999.

It tells the story of a young man from a poor family whose mother sacrifices everything to make a better life for her son. She goes hungry so that he may eat, gets him out of trouble when he has a fight at school, and in the end they save up enough money to start a restaurant of their own to have a better future.

But ultimately the mother passes away and the son is left alone with just his loving memories of the woman who brought him into this world and raised him - "I loved you even though I never told you once. I love you, please rest now."

Often considered one of the best debut songs in modern K-Pop, “To Mother” has been covered by many of the top idol groups of today, including 2PM and SISTAR, and made stars out of g.o.d.

“Mom” - UV

UV might not be a K-Pop group, per se, but they are well known for their hilarious parody songs and videos and the 2010 track “Mom” is no exception.

UV is a hip-hop duo comprised of comedian Yoo Se Yoon and High Syde's Muzi and they gained popularity for their catchy tunes, interesting lyrics, and hilarious music videos.

“Mom” is about all the situations encountered between mother and son during the Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) holidays. Even though the song is meant to be funny, it contains several lines with deeper meaning and showing respect and appreciation for mom, especially the chorus of "I really love mom."

The video features Yoo Se Yoon's actual mother and was filmed on his birthday using a cell phone.

“Oh Mom” - TOP

TOP is the Big Bang member known for his close relationship with his mother, so it comes as no surprise that he would reference her in a song.

While “Oh Mom” is not a tribute to his mother, not even really about her at all, it does play homage to the mother-son bond. Shortly after G-Dragon and TOP released their collaborative album GD&TOP, the low-voiced rapper revealed the reasoning behind the song saying it was based on a true story.

“I can't tell the story in detail,” TOP said in an interview with TenAsia, “But you can consider it as a gift that I wanted to give a friend who was gravely ill.”

In the song's chorus, TOP begs his mom for advice about what to do in the difficult situation - “Oh mom, what should I do mom? A selfishness hotter than a fire torments me, oh my god. Oh mom, I promise mom, what can I do?”

“Dear Mom” - Girls' Generation

SNSD paid tribute to their caring mothers with the song “Dear Mom” in 2009. This heartwarming tune addresses relationship between mother and daughter and was meant as a thank you to the strong, sincere women who raised the idols and made them the powerful, talented women they are today.

The lyrics are about a girl who struggles to tell her mother how much she loves her and promises to be a better daughter. “Dear Mom” reflects on the past and hopes for the future of their relationship. The end of the song summarizes this sentiment exactly - “I'll become a heart that is warm as the unconditional love you've shown me. I was shy and couldn't often express, that mother, I really love you.”

"Red Sun" - Jang Woo Hyuk

Jang Woo Hyuk is one of the original K-Pop idols, a rapper who debuted in 1996 with the boy band H.O.T. After the group split, he was briefly a part of JLT, a trio comprised of three former H.O.T members and after they, too, disbanded, he went off on his own solo career.

"Red Sun" is from Jang Woo Hyuk's debut solo album from 2005 and is a very personal song about his mother. In it, he apologizes to his mom for not being the perfect son - "I was a rude boy without any manners." The song also repeats a chorus of "I'm so sorry mom, so sorry mom," and talks about the moment when he realized just how much he had hurt her.

The song praises his mother for her unyielding love even when her son treats her badly and in the end Jang Woo Hyuk understands all the pain he has caused her and tell her how much he really does love her, "because she is always in my heart. The most beautiful woman in this world, that person is my mother."

Will you be spinning any of these tracks for your mom today? Happy Mother's Day!!
