Review: Yoon Gun Once Again Channeling Brit Pop In New Single 'Back To You,' Song Has Shades Of Oasis, Doves [AUDIO]

For those of us old enough to remember the 1990s, it is odd to think of the music of the era as classic rock.

Yet, at 36-years-old, Yoon Gun has made a successful career for himself by bringing back the seminal sound of British pop bands like Oasis, the Verve and Blur, that rose to prominence while Generation X-ers were taking their first stumbling steps into adulthood.

With Yoon Gun's new anthemic single "Back To You," currently at number 37 on Billboard Magazine's K-Pop Hot 100, the singer again rides the formula to great effect.

The song, catchy and uplifting, resembles a Korean version of the Oasis classic "Don't Look Back In Anger."

Although Yoon's tune lacks the impeccable production usually associated with Oasis (and, of course, the inimitable voice of Liam Gallagher), the big guitars and the whirling climax of the chorus, make it clear what sound he is shooting for.

The chord progression in "Back To You" pulls on your heartstrings like an Oasis song, and the song strikes the proper balance between arena rock antics and songwriting craftsmanship that Noel Gallagher strives for.

Although not typically included as part of the 1990s Brit pop movement, the British indie rock band Doves appears to have also made an impact on Yoon's sonic palate, particularly in the thunderous quality of the rhythm section.

In exploring the sonic potential of the sound left behind as the 1990s Brit pop giants faded into a sea of excess and eventually band breakups, Yoon Gun has stumbled into very fertile ground.

It's not just that "Back To You" doesn't sound like anything in K-pop, there is very little in the international pop scene that it resembles in any discernible way.

In returning to the last era of pre-Pro Tools non-digital rock music, Yoon reminds us that all of the pieces are still there to make a rock song palatable for the masses.

The main area where the performer could improve is in his recording studio production techniques.

Simply by channeling the last era where the guitar was king, the singer has already created work that sounds better than 90 percent of what's out there, yet it still sounds as if it was recorded on a computer.

If Yoon Gun went into a studio like London's legendary Abbey Road or Los Angeles's Sound City where Nirvana recorded Nevermind, and told the engineer he wanted to make records the way they did back in the 1990s, the result could be earthshattering.
