BTS Welcomes 2020 With Performance In Times Square NYC + Exclusive Photos From The Event

Even amongst the illuminated billboards of New York City’s Times Square, the brightest lights were the seven stars on stage ringing in the New Year: BTS.

Every year on the 31st of December, millions of people gather in Times Square, NYC to witness the famous New Years ball make its 60 second descent. Hailing from all corners of the world, the crowds bring their warmest coats, their loved ones, and their best wishes for the New Year. This year, a new audience was present: BTS ARMY.

Fans of the seven member band under Big Hit Entertainment waited hours in the cold to see their faves perform on stage for Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest on ABC. For those who wanted to keep warm and stan BTS at the same time, sportswear brand FILA handed out FILA x BTS fleece blankets earlier that day as a promotion for the upcoming partnership between the two.

BTS was trending online from the early morning into the start of the New Year — a testament to their ever-growing international popularity. The highly anticipated moment arrived at 10:40 in the evening as BTS finally took the stage.

Adorned in black coats and sequined jackets, BTS opened their New Year's set with "Make It Right" on top of Times Square's iconic red steps. They looked sleek, polished, and youthful as they methodically danced up and down the illuminated steps before making their way to the main stage. Cheers only escalated as they walked and greeted fans at the barricades during RM's rap verse.

They jumped into their second and final song of their set on the main stage: their latest title track "Boy With Luv." Unfortunately, Halsey was not present during her iconic "oh my my my's," but BTS brought the energy and good vibes as they took over Times Square with their performance.

Even in the cold and loud of New York, the fanchant for "Boy With Luv" was loud and clear, and the crowd was full of BT21 headbands and BTS lightsticks. The live stream captured clips of fans singing along to Jungkook's silky voice and Suga's energetic rap.

BTS were not only entertaining and energizing on stage - they were the definition of prime professionalism. J-Hope never missed a chance to interact with the fans in the crowd, just like he never missed a beat in the choreography. And when Jimin's dynamic dance moves landed his jacket draped atop his head, he took advantage of the moment by cutely incorporating the accident into the choreography as if it were planned.

The stage may have been small but the performance was massive: amongst the audience of millions that were present, millions more watched in support as their performance was streamed live all over the world. We expect nothing less from the fans of BTS!

BTS reappeared on the stage with host Ryan Seacrest and fellow artists Post Malone, Sam Hunt, and Alanis Morissette as they counted down to the start of 2020. The cameras captured their wide eyes and big smiles as Times Square was filled with colorful confetti and ringing cheers.
