Korean Netizens Demand Irene Leave Red Velvet Following Attitude Controversy

On October 23, it was announced that Red Velvet's online fan meeting would be canceled following member Irene's attitude controversy. Following the news, Korean netizens are demanding Irene leave the group to save Red Velvet's reputation.

Red Velvet was scheduled to have an online fan meeting through YouTube with the 2020 Korean Culture Festival. Though the organizers initially announced the fan meeting would go as scheduled, Red Velvet and SM Entertainment had told the 2020 Korean Culture Festival organizers that they would ultimately be unable to attend the event. This comes just after a day it was revealed by multiple staff members and editors who work in the entertainment industry that they were victims of Irene's poor attitude.

Following the news of the online fan meeting's cancellation, Korean netizens have voiced their desire for Irene to leave Red Velvet. Irene debuted with the group in 2014 and is their leader, center, visual, and group face. Despite how important her position is in the group, people are still demanding she leave.

On October 21, Wednesday, Kang Kook Hwa shared a lengthy post to her Instagram account, exposing a female idol for their rude personality. She did not name any names but revealed that the idol verbally abused her and that the moment she entered the room, the idol did not greet her, just sat down, and started saying mean words at her while pointing. She claimed that she had heard stories from other people about that idol for a while but did not know it was so bad. Netizens had speculated it was a Red Velvet member, as she had ended the post with the hashtags #psycho and #monster, which are two popular songs from Red Velvet.

Following the backlash, Irene issued an apology through her Instagram account. She apologized for her "foolish and imprudent behavior" and admitted that she regrets the hurt and damage she has caused to the people she previously worked with. Irene revealed she was ashamed of her past words and actions and promised that this will not happen again. Additionally, she apologized to the fans who had supported her.
