Aespa Breaks Record on Billboard Chart With 'Black Mamba'

SM Entertainment's new girl group Aespa has broken a Billboard chart record! Keep on reading to see what record they broke.

On Thursday, Nov. 26, SM Entertainment announced on their official Twitter account that Aespa's debut song, "Black Mamba," entered the Billboard with a three-day count. The girl group charted at number 100 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. Chart. This is the highest ever ranked for a K-pop artist's debut song.

The Billboard Global Excl. U.S. Chart was launched on Sept. 20. The chart focuses on music in all territories outside of the United States. The rankings are based on official-only streams, whether it be on subscription-based platforms or ad-supported platforms. They also take into account downloads from online music retailers.

Other than the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. Chart, the group, also peaked at number 183 on the Billboard Global 200 chart and number 4 on Billboard U.S.'s World Digital Song Sales. They debuted at the top of China's Q.Q. Music Chart and at number 117 on South Korea's Gaon charts.

While it appears to be getting love from international fans, Korean listeners are not that favorable. Earlier this month (Nov.), it was reported that people were rating Aespa's song extremely low on the South Korean music platform, Melon. During the time of the report's publication, the song had over 20,000 reviews on the platform and a 1.6-star rating out of 5.

Many had stated that they rated the song low due to the group's ongoing plagiarism controversy.

"Black Mamba" was released on Nov. 17 through SM Entertainment. The song is composed of numerous genres, namely hip-hop, dance-pop, and electropop. "Black Mamba" contains a signature synth sound and bass that is paired with a highly addictive hook. The song tells how the members and their AI (also known as ae) counterparts are connected and talks about the world the ae members come from.

The music video was released the same day as the song's release. It garnered 21.4 million views within the first 24 hours of release, making it the most-viewed debut music video by a group, beating out the record ITZY set in 2019 with "DALLA DALLA." It reached 10 million views in the first nine hours of release, making it the fastest debut music video to reach 10 million views in K-pop history. As of press time, the music video currently has over 57 million views.

Aespa is a four-member girl group under SM Entertainment. The group is composed of Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning. Aespa is known for its unique concept of having virtual counterparts to their human members, making them eight-members. Their name, Aespa, means "Avatar X Experience" and "Aspect," showing the two sides of the groups and the new experience they bring to K-pop.

Prior to the group's debut, Ningning was introduced as an SM Entertainments pre-debut team member, SM Rookies, in 2016. In 2019, Karina appeared in Taemin's music video for "WANT." She went on to perform on music shows with him.
