BTS 'Butter' Entangled in Plagiarism Controversy with the Background Music for Japanese Game 'Monster in My Pocket'

BTS's "Butter" is currently embroiled in a plagiarism controversy with the background music for the Japanese video game, "Monster in My Pocket."

On July 19, a post about BTS's "Butter" and the "Monster in My Pocket" soundtrack sounding alike was made on an online community.

Since BTS has become one of the biggest music groups in the world, the post is gaining attention from numerous users.

BTS Butter Involved in a Plagiarism Controversy with "Monster in My Pocket" Background Music

"Monster in My Pocket" is a Japanese video game produced by Konami back in 1992 for NES platforms. It moderately follows the storyline of the comic book series of the same name and features the majority of the monster characters.

Konami is a Japanese entertainment agency that is well-known for producing video game series that has garnered fame in the country and around the world. Some of these are TwinBee, Metal Gear, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Ganbare Goemon, Pro Evolution Soccer, and Castlevania.

In the post made on an online community, an anonymous user shared a YouTube link of the background music for "Monster in My Pocket."

In the comments, netizens have mixed reactions to the topic. Some pointed out that the intro of BTS's
Butter" and "Monster in My Pocket" background music sound the same.

Others commented that it was not only the intro of "Monster in My Pocket" soundtrack that was plagiarized but also the fact that BTS's "Butter" is repeating the same sequence.

Meanwhile, other netizens stated that if "Butter" was really copied from the BGM of the Japanese video game, Konami would have sued HYBE for plagiarism months ago after it was released in May.

Some users said that it is not plagiarism, but instead, an interpolation, which is re-recording the notes in your own way.

BTS Boy With Luv Becomes Fastest K-pop Boy Group Music Video to Hit 1.3 Billion Views

In other news, BTS has recently obtained another striking milestone on YouTube.

On July 18 at around 4:18 p.m. KST, the music video for BTS's "Boy With Luv" (featuring Halsey) reached 1.3 billion views on YouTube, becoming the second MV of the boy group to do so following "DNA."

BTS's "Boy With Luv" MV was uploaded on April 12, 2019 at 6 p.m. KST, so this means it took over two years, five days, 22 hours, and 18 minutes to attain the feat.

Because of this, "Boy With Luv" has broken the record for the fastest music video by a K-pop boy group to cross 1.3 billion YouTube views.

The record was previously held by BTS's "DNA" that hit 1.3 billion views in three years, nine months, 14 days, five hours, and 55 minutes.

The only other Korean MVs with more than 1.3 billion YouTube views are PSY's "Gangnam Style" and "Gentleman", and BLACKPINK's "DDU-DU DDU-DU" and "Kill This Love."

"Boy With Luv" also holds the record for the fastest MV by a K-pop boy group to reach 1.2 billion views - it achieved the milestone in two years, two days, and 15 hours.
