aespa Winter Criticized for Allegedly Being a Feminist after She Used a Slang Word

Recently, there has been a growing number of females in South Korea, especially celebrities, being criticized for allegedly being feminists, as well as being slammed for using certain words and actions that are deemed pro-feminist in the country.

Hannam - a slang for entitled and misogynistic men - communities label feminists as individuals who hate and belittle men, and have labeled numerous female K-Pop idols and actresses as such.

Recently in a Hannam online community, aespa's Winter was criticized for allegedly being feminist after she was heard saying a slang word in one of the group's recent Naver V Live.

During the live stream, Winter was heard requesting fans to listen to their song "Forever" five trillion times. The word Winter used was say five trillion times was "oh-jo-uk," which is similar to "oh-jo-oh-uk," which means five trillion and 500 million.

"Oh-jo-oh-uk" is a term used to denote a large number and is often used by feminists in South Korea, who use the term to express their large amount of surprise. Besides "Oh-jo-oh-uk," the term "Hubba hubba" is also tagged as a feminist word.

The Hannam community has since then criticized the aespa singer for allegedly being a feminist.

However, internet users also criticized the Hannam community for their continuous claims and attacks. Some also mentioned that male idol groups and celebrities have also used the coined term, but they only criticize females.

Recently, Brave Girls' Yuna was also criticized and labeled as a feminist after using the same slang word during a game. Former IZ*ONE member, Lee Chaeyeon, had her Instagram Story removed after she was reported to have made a feminist symbol, while Olympic gold medalist An San was attacked for having short hair - which is said to be a symbol for the feminist movement.

What are your thoughts on the issue?
