aespa Named by TIME Magazine as 'Next Generation Leaders' in 2022

On May 12 local time, world-renowned magazine TIME announced that SM Entertainment's rookie girl group, aespa, has been included in this year's "Next Generation Leaders" by the magazine in partnership with Rolex.

"Next Generation Leaders" highlights the global trendsetters who have the potential to contribute valuable innovations to society's future.

This is especially an exceptional feat as aespa is still a rookie girl group, having only been in the industry for less than two years since their debut in November 2020.

In addition, this means that aespa is the first girl group to ever be featured on the prestigious TIME Magazine list, and the second K-Pop artist in history after BTS, who was named as a "Next Generation Leader" back in 2018.

An article about aespa was also shared by TIME Magazine, who praised the four-piece girl group for the achievements that they have racked up in the past year and a half.

Such achievements include their experiment on the metaverse, debuting on the Billboard 200 chart with the highest rank achieved by a K-Pop girl group, their music video for "Black Mamba" becoming the fastest Youtube video to hit 100 million views for a K-Pop debut, and more.

During their interview with the magazine, the aespa members also talked about their unique concept of having a "metaversal origin story."

To this, Ningning shared, "Truthfully, we were worried in the beginning, because this concept of ours is something new to our company as well. But our fans really loved it and are even creating memes out of it."

With their concept, aespa hopes to "normalize metaverse concepts and have our fans and other people be a little more comfortable with the whole idea of it," according to Giselle.
