Rookie Girl Group Accused of Plagiarizing NewJeans 'Cookie' & 'Attention'– Here's What Happened

THIS girl group just debuted in October, but they are already facing their first controversy for allegedly plagiarizing NewJeans' "Attention" and "Cookie." Here's what really happened.

tripleS' 1st Sub- Unit Acid Angel from Asia Debut MV 'Generation'

On October 28, Triple S's first "DIMENSION" (sub-unit) named Acid Angel from Asia (AAA), an idol of all possibilities, took its first step in the music industry.

On this day, AAA (comprised of four members: Kim Yooyeon, Kim Nakyoung, Gong Yubin and Jeong Hyerin) is set to release its debut album, "ACCESS," at 6 p.m. KST.

Ahead of its official launch, the album's title track, "Generation," and its music video were first released on its YouTube channel.

In particular, "Generation" is a song that conveys AAA's special message. It features a girl from the new generation who loves selfies and TikTok without letting go of her cell phone wherever she goes.

Through this, it expressed the feeling of tasting "acid" rather than sweetness or saltiness. This relays that the current gen is losing the boundary between the real self and the ideal self they created online.

AAA Accused of Plagiarizing NewJeans Following Similarities in MVs, Concept

While the new girl group Triple S released the music video and concept of the title song "Generation," suspicions of similarity with NewJeans were raised.

According to fans who already watched AAA's MV, it is significantly similar with NewJeans' "Attention" and "Cookie."

Starting with the MV, "Attention" and "Generation" featured the members as high school students who seemed to cut classes. Since then, it has been shown that members who changed into trendy clothes walked around the streets to film each other's videos or take pictures of themselves and post them on social media, having fun without paying their minds to others.

Netizens pointed out:

  • "It reminds me of NewJeans too much."
  • "NewJeans MV also includes a scene where they used SNS and press like."
  • "Isn't it too similar?"

Not only in "Attention", but others also emphasized the resemblance of AAA's MV with NewJeans' choreographies.

In fact, the arm movement, which is the point movement of NewJeans "Cookie," and the upper body turn were similar to AAA's "Generation," drawing attention.

As the speculations went on, other fans also accused the new sub-unit of stealing the concept of NewJeans, who is known for their Y2K concept, long straight hair that reminds people of being youth.

However, some fans and netters defended the tripleS' sub-unit and said:

  • "There are a lot of groups who also did the 2000s-ish concept."
  • "Isn't this dance movement too common?"
  • "I can't see the similarities."
  • "I heard it's a girl group (AAA) that's been preparing since 2019. How can they plagiarize NewJeans when it hasn't been long since they also debuted?"
