5 K-pop Groups With All Members Having Different Surnames: aespa, Red Velvet, More!

In the K-pop industry, several groups have members with the same surname since accounting for half of the population in South Korea possess the five most common surnames, namely Kim, Lee, Park, Choi, and Jung (spelling may vary). For instance, some K-pop fans dub "Kim line" or "Lee line" on a specific group for easy distinction.

Nonetheless, there are also K-pop groups whose members have different surnames that signify diversity in family origin and place of birth. With this unique characteristic, these K-pop groups often stand out as fans easily remember them.

Are you a K-pop newbie who is trying to familiarize yourself? This list may be for you!

Here are 5 K-pop Groups With All Members Having Different Surnames

1. PENTAGON

One of the things that Universe (PENTAGON's fandom) may flex is that all nine members have different surnames! Interestingly, even though 7 out of 9 members are Korean, they still have different last names. Respectively, the surnames of PENTAGON members are Lee, Jo, Yang, Go, Yeo, Yan, Adachi, Kang, and Jung.

The former member of PENTAGON, E'Dawn (Kim Hyo-jong), was the only bearer of the Kim surname in the group.

2. TWICE

The 'FEEL SPECIAL' singers were formed through a reality show, Sixteen, under JYP Entertainment. This South Korean-Japanese girl group has nine members with diverse surnames.

One reason the group members have different last names is that one-third are foreigners (Momo, Sana, and Mina). Surprisingly, even though TWICE have members who have Park (Jihyo) and Kim (Dahyun), one of the most common Korean surnames, as their last names, they do not have a surname sibling within the group!

3. aespa

The powerhouse visual quartet from SM Entertainment does not just obtain vocal ranges and techniques; each member has a distinct last name too.

Group's leader and main dancer, Karina, lives by her birth name, Yu Ji Min, while a Japanese member, Giselle, has Uchinaga as her surname. Another foreign member, Ningning, was given the birth name Ning Yizhuo and lead vocalist and dancer, Winter, was born with the name Kim Min Jeong.

4. HIGHLIGHT

Joining the roster of K-pop groups that rejects the "sibling surname" allegations is HIGHLIGHT, formerly known as B2ST. The group debuted under CUBE Entertainment in 2009, but after the original member, Jang Hyunseung, left B2ST, the members transferred to Around Us Entertainment.

There, they have rebranded the group - HIGHLIGHT. However, in early 2019, member Junhyung left the group, leaving HIGHLIGHT with only four members.

The remaining four members also have different last names: Yoon, Yang, Lee, and Son. Therefore, B2ST/HIGHLIGHT qualifies in the criteria if one considers the former members (Yong and Jang).

5. Red Velvet

The 'Feel My Rhythm' singers do not just offer a variety of talents that range from acting, singing, rapping, dancing, and modeling, but are also known to be one of the groups to reject the "sibling surname" assertions.

Before adding a new member to the group in 2015, Red Velvet's debut line-up already qualifies for the criteria. The 'Happiness' line-up of Red Velvet follows members with surnames Bae, Kang, Son, and Park. With Yeri's addition, the group scored a member whose surname is "Kim."
