While a lot of MYs shared their own interpretation of "Thirsty," aespa themselves revealed the real meaning of the song and its music video.

aespa's 'Thirsty' Explained: 3 Members Likes Same Guy + Karina's Special Role

On May 9, there is a track video released by the "fourth-gen leader" aespa that has been making a buzz among K-pop enthusiasts and netters.

In particular, on the 8th, the quartet comprised of Karina, Giselle, Winter and NingNing officially made their much-awaited return with its third-mini album, "MY WORLD." On the same day, the title track, "Spicy" along with five other songs was released on various music-sharing platforms.

Upon its release, the album received rave reviews, and among the six songs, there is a track that is particularly earning massive attention from fans, especially MYs (fandom), and it is none other than the b-sidetrack, "Thirsty"!

According to the initial announcement, the song's lyrics compare the proponent's love to a wave that gets deeper endlessly toward the love interest. On May 5, a track video was even released and it immediately became a hot topic for its high-teen movie-like concept that reminds people of the classic sitcom, "FRIENDS" in the 90s.

As it continue to draw hot discussion, the group explained its content themselves and Karina said:

"There is a man (named) A in the track video content. This A is Giselle's ex-boyfriend, Winter's unrequited love, and NingNing's current boyfriend."

Karina then dropped the shocking plot twist, saying:

"However, only I know that A is the same person."

Giselle then elaborated on the relationship of the four girls in the MV, saying:

"And the four of us are best friends. It is about how everyone comforts, cheers, and offers dating counseling without knowing the existence of A. It's totally 'transition love'."

MYs React To aespa's 'Thirsty' Interpretation

Looking at the MV then, NingNing was seen comforting Giselle, not knowing that she was the ex-girlfriend of her current boyfriend. aespa Winter was also hopelessly in unrequited love with the same person, without her being aware that A dated two of her best friends already. As for Karina, she was just there, looking after her friends despite knowing everything.

Netizens who heard aespa's explanation expressed their surprise at the MV's concept, saying:

  • "This is such an X-genealogy."
  • "The content is catastrophic."
  • "At first, I thought it was just a mid-sized 'Friends' homage."
  • "What is this?"
  • "I thought it was fresh content, but it was marathon-flavored."
  • "It's a real American high-teen (drama). I'll watch it again."

Meanwhile, aespa which made a comeback in 10 months with its third mini-album, "MY WORLD" on May 8, ranked second among all K-pop girl groups with 1.8 million pre-order albums sold. It is also the second-largest record with 2 million pre-orders after BLACKPINK's second full-length album, "BORN PINK."
