Ex-WJSN Member Raises Brows for Absurd 'Punishment' After Misusing Chinese Letter

After misusing a Chinese letter and earning criticism, THIS former WJSN member had to release a self-reflection and do this absurd "punishment."

Ex-WJSN Wu Xuanyi Criticized for Misusing Chinese Letter — Here's Absurd Punishment

K-pop idol-turned-actress Wu Xuanyi, also known as Betty Wu, became a hot topic in the Chinese entertainment scene after misusing a character and giving herself a "punishment."

In particular, her new drama, "Rising With the Wind," started airing on the video-streaming platform iQiyi. During the premiere, a video of the actress was unveiled.

While a lot of fans expressed their delight for the idol actress, Xuanyi met an unexpected wave of criticism after she used the wrong character for the word "root" while explaining the drama at the premiere. Instead of "根" (ggen), she wrote "恨" (han).

While some fans gave her the benefit of the doubt and explained that it could be a mistake rather than "ignorance," Chinese internet users pointed out Xuanyi's mistake immediately and lashed out at her with mockery.

Some went as far as mocking celebrities for not having a good academic background, being illiterate and expressing regret for not having enough knowledge and cultural level.

Unfortunately, the controversy didn't die immediately, that's why Wu Xuanyi responded to this matter by apologizing on SNS.

However, contrary to the Korean industry an apology statement would be enough, Wu showed sincere self-reflection and punished herself by using the character "ggen" as many as 100 times.

Looking at this, some K-netizens and the K-media emphasized that the incident is an absurd and forced hating that can be overlooked, but this once again showed the sad reality of celebrities in the Chinese entertainment world.

Wu Xuanyi's Recent Activities

Meanwhile, Wu Xuanyi's name was first known in the K-pop scene after debuting as a member of WJSN in 2016, a group created by Yue Hua and Starship Entertainment.

While she was actively promoted in Korea for her early debut days, Xuanyi's popularity in China increased and in 2018, she joined the Chinese spin-off of "Produce 101" and made it into the final lineup after ranking No. 2. She debuted as a member of Rocket Girls 101 in the same year, but her agency clarified that she will still promote as WJSN.

Since then, Xuanyi will often miss activities for her Korean group due to conflicting schedules in China. In March 2023, the female idol ultimately left WJSN after contract expiration with Starship Entertainment.

After concluding activities in Korea, Xuanyi focused on her career in China, focusing on her solo singing path. She also started acting and gained popularity for her dramas, "Douluo Continent," "Sweet Teeth" and "The Princess and the Werewolf."
