On February 19, Kim Sungjoo, a member of Yuehua's boy group UNIQ, shocked the K-pop industry after a speculation arose that he's already married and has a son.

After more than two weeks of silence, the K-pop idol finally spoke up and released his official statement regarding the rumor.

UNIQ Sungjoo's Secret Wife & Child Accidentally Exposed to Public

Kim Sungjoo, who is now actively promoting in China, took to a livestream to celebrate his birthday with Uniqorns (UNIQ fandom).

At the time, he received a voice message from co-member Li Wenhan, and without checking its content, Kim played and listened to it together with the viewers.

At first, it appeared to be a fun greeting from Li which immediately warmed fans' hearts due to the members' continuous interaction amid UNIQ's hiatus.

However, the same birthday voice greeting would become controversial after Li Wenhan mentioned a so-called "son" of Sungjoo, which was still a secret at the time.

While there were viewers who brushed it off by claiming that Li Wenhan is just being his usual funny guy, the information posed curiosity about its legitimacy When Sungjoo showed a concerned expression and turned off the live stream abruptly without any explanation.

UNIQ Sungjoo Apologizes for Keeping Wife & Child a Secret to Fans

On March 2, after about two weeks of keeping his silence, Sungjoo finally took to his personal Instagram to release an apology letter. There, he finally confessed that he's already married and a father to a son.

"Hi, this is Kim Sungjoo.

"I apologize for surprising many people with such sudden news on online communities and social media, as well as for not being able to show myself honestly.

I wanted to quickly deliver the news to the fans who always showed me support and love, but I wasn't able to because I was in a situation where I had to be cautious.

Even though I'm late, I want to tell you this honestly, I will walk beautifully through the coming days with my precious family as a faithful father and husband.

Thank you."

After this news circulated among fandoms, people cheered on Sungjoo, and understood his reason for keeping his private life.

Uniqorns explained that aside from protecting his family, they know that he also did it to save UNIQ from possible backlash.
