During a recent variety show appearance, INFINITE member Sunggyu shared his candid thoughts on the idol's dating.

During the first, second, and third generations of K-pop, idol dating was a taboo topic. Idols who were caught dating received immense backlash from fans for ruining the fantasy and parasocial relationships they formed with them. Nowadays, however, it has become more commonplace, with more idols coming out with their relationships sooner.

INFINITE Sunggyu Opens Up on Idol's Dating

During the latest episode of SBS's "Dolsing Fourment" on April 16, 2024, INFINITE leader Sunggyu showed off his honest side.

The latest episode had the theme of "those who have what the Dolsing Fourmen don't." Kim Sunggyu was introduced as someone who has "youth that Tak Jae Hoon wants but cannot have." Hearing this, Kim Sunggyu reacted happily, saying, "Here, I am young, but I'm actually 36 years old.

Sunggyu chuckled shyly at Lee Sang Min's comment, "Sunggyu only loves his mother, sister, and fans." The INFINITE member then stated that he finds it disrespectful and unmannerly to the fans if he were to date, especially since he is an idol. 

Korean Netizens React to INFINITE Sunggyu's Stance on Idol's Dating

Soon after the episode aired, a post titled "Kim Sunggyu's 'Idols dating is disrespectful to fans...' statement of conviction" was shared on the well-known South Korean online community forum Instiz. The post soon garnered buzz from Korean netizens.

Many people praised Sunggyu, with fans stating that he is a true pro idol and that is the reason why they love him. They also commented that his words probably come from experience. While INFINITE was promoting, a co-member was embroiled in relationship rumors, which caused their reputation to take a hit.

Others stated that Sunggyu probably meant that idols can date; they just don't make it obvious or known to fans. People also noted that they hope Sunggyu does date but don't bring attention to his future relationship.
