JinJin, leader and main rapper of the popular K-pop group ASTRO, has been officially exempted from South Korea's mandatory military service due to health-related issues, his agency announced this week.

Fantagio, ASTRO's management company, released a statement confirming that JinJin, whose real name is Park Jin-woo, will not be enlisting after a recent medical evaluation by the Military Manpower Administration. The agency explained that JinJin has been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition that, while manageable in daily life, requires ongoing medical care and regular hospital visits.

"JinJin's health condition makes it difficult for him to participate in the communal and physically demanding environment required by military service," Fantagio said. "We ask for your understanding and continued support as JinJin focuses on his health and future activities."

The specific nature of JinJin's autoimmune condition was not disclosed, in accordance with privacy considerations. The agency emphasized that the idol's daily life and professional activities can continue as usual, but the unpredictable nature of his illness and the need for consistent medical supervision led to his exemption.

JinJin, 29, debuted with ASTRO in 2016 and quickly rose to prominence as the group's leader, rapper, and songwriter. News of his exemption comes as other members of ASTRO, including Cha Eun-woo, prepare for or are currently serving their own military duties.

Fans, known as AROHA, expressed mixed emotions—relief that JinJin's health is being prioritized, but concern over the challenges he faces. Many took to social media to share messages of support, using hashtags such as #StayStrongJinJin and #ASTRO.

Fantagio concluded its announcement by thanking fans for their understanding and promising to provide updates on JinJin's activities and health as needed.

South Korea requires all able-bodied men to serve in the military for approximately 18 to 21 months, with exemptions granted only for specific medical or personal circumstances.

JinJin is expected to continue his activities with ASTRO and pursue solo projects while managing his health.

The next ASTRO member to start his military service is Cha Eun-woo: Accepted into the Republic of Korea Army Military Band and will begin his mandatory military service on July 28, 2025.
