Netflix dropped the official trailer for its new Korean series "Aema" on August 8, building anticipation for its official August 22 premiere.

The trailer showcases intense moments from the fictionalized production of the 1980s erotic film "Madame Aema," highlighting the clash between two actresses navigating a male-dominated industry.

The opening scenes focus on Jeong Hee-ran (Lee Hanee), an award-winning star who publicly refuses to film explicit scenes after reading the original "Madame Aema" script. Frustrated by her stance, production head Ku Jung-ho (Jin Sun-kyu) demotes her to a supporting role by making use of an exclusive contract clause.

This pivotal conflict sets the stage for newcomer Shin Joo-ae (Bang Hyo-rin) to seize the lead through a high-stakes audition. In the trailer, Joo-ae boldly declares, "Make me the next Jung Hee-ran," to which Hee-ran responds with a smirk and a single word: "Interesting."

Director Kwak In-u (Cho Hyun-chul), portrayed as a passionate first-time filmmaker, watches as his vision collides with studio politics and censorship. The trailer also teases government-mandated script revisions that absurdly change the film's working title from "A Woman Who Loves Horses" to "A Woman Who Loves Hemp," satirizing the era's censorship contradictions.

The series, helmed by Lee Hae-Young, known for films such as "Believer" and "Like a Virgin," meticulously recreates 1980s Chungmuro through detailed set designs, costumes, and lighting that evoke the period's cinematic glamour and grit. Authentic props and period-appropriate camera techniques deepen the immersive experience, transporting viewers into the heart of Korea's golden era of erotica.

At its core, "Aema" examines themes of female solidarity and resistance. After initial rivalry, Hee-ran and Joo-ae gradually form an alliance to challenge exploitative power structures and preserve their artistic integrity. The trailer's final shot shows the two women standing side by side against the backdrop of a neon-lit studio facade, capturing a sense of shared resolve.

Produced by The LAMP and Netflix, "Aema" spans six episodes, each running approximately 30 to 35 minutes. Filming was completed in spring 2024, and the series will be available in over 190 countries, with subtitles and dubbing in multiple languages to reach a global audience.

With its blend of black comedy, period detail, and social commentary, "Aema" promises a bold reimagining of a pivotal moment in Korean film history. Viewers can stream all episodes on Netflix starting August 22.
