Review: Rock Band YB Returns With Ninth Album 'Mystery,' Title Track Channels American Indie Angst [VIDEO]

In the nearly 20 years that South Korean rock band YB has been releasing records they have experimented with their fair share of musical styles.

But with YB's new single "Mystery," the group has found a sound that feels both current and natural.

"Mystery" has an intense energy and travels through several musical genres, from the danceable sly verse to the fist-pounding chorus.

And although the Yoon Do Yoon's vocals veer at moments sickeningly close to Nickelback territory, the overall sonic quality is much more indie dance, to the relief of listeners with taste everywhere.

The drum and guitar interplay, particularly in the feel-good verse, is closer to recent dance rock acts like Modest Mouse and Franz Ferdinand, but there is also a bit of the slashing guitars of recent acts like OK Go.

The angularly rhythmic guitar playing also owes a quite a bit to the dance punk of 1970s innovators like The Buzzcocks and Gang of Four.

The arrangement choices at times resemble the modern prog rock of The Mars Volta. This is a sonic resemblance brought into even sharper focus by Yoon's soaring vocals in the chorus.

And while that chorus hook comes a bit too close at times to arena rock cheese, the burning organ solo that follows it saves the song from entering the sonic dregs of current American top 40 rock radio.

But "Mystery" has too many good things going for it to write off as another hard rock sound alike, not the least of which is the performance of guitarist Huh Joon.

Huh Joon bounces between the sinewy rhythmic leads of the verse to the power-chord filled chorus with ease.

The music video for "Mystery" is beautifully shot, showing Yoon at home, at a barbershop and skateboarding around his city.

Yoon's look and the look of the overall video has strong tones of John Lennon circa 1969, particularly his style at the iconic last Beatles photo shoot, which took place at Tittenhurst Park, at the legend's iconic English country home.

The interesting thing about the video is how the Lennon-esque fashion, down to the same hat, glasses, beard and facial hair, melds with Yoon's South Korean sensibility.

And then there's the skateboard.

Lennon on a skateboard, that has to be an image that would make Paul McCartney smile.
