When producer Brave Brothers and the members of 4Minute get together, something special happens.

The new 4Minute single "Is It Poppin'?" like the band's runaway hit "What's Your Name?" before it, is the result of what is clearly a fruitful partnership for the girl group and their A-List producer.

And beyond the obvious chart potential, the two 4Minute songs that Brave Brothers has produced have something way more exciting--originality.

Though they are distinctively different songs, "What's Your Name?" and "Is It Poppin?'" also have a quality that ties them together, like bookends.

The two songs would make the perfect A-side and B-side of a single.

4Minute and their superstar producer have truly carved out a new sound for themselves.

Brothers's use of hi-pitched tom-tom sounds to provide rhythmic flourishes creates a sound that feels like an electro take on the West African talking drum.

The resulting beat is difficult to classify.

There are traces of 1980s American hip hop and 1990s R&B, but when it comes to truly defining the sound, as the ladies sing in "Is It Poppin?'" "...it's 4Minute."

And whatever the rhythmic feel is, the sound is danceable and fun, so who really cares about classifying it?

The song and accompanying music video for "Is It Poppin?'" is not as dark as "What's Your Name," and if there is one area where the girls could have improved, it would be to throw in some of the attitude that made their previous hit so irresistible.

The exception in the attitude department is Kim Hyuna, whose rap in the new 4Minute single has all the fire of her "What's Your Name" performance.

Hyuna is also the standout star in the "Is It Poppin?'" music video.

There is something about her performance that makes her impossible not to look at. Even in the video's large crowd scenes, your eyes are drawn to her.

Her rap is a high point of the song.

"Is It Poppin?'" features solid performances from all the members and a video with the off-kilter good times that fans have come to expect from the band.

Yet Brothers and 4Minute are at their strongest when they get a little bit dark.

There is something about Brothers's electronic take on indigenous beats (whether conscious or unconscious) that makes them the perfect sound for the members of 4Minute to channel their 20-something rage.
