Review: JQ Finds A Warm, Organic Sound On 'Tell Me Yes' Featuring G.Tiger [AUDIO]

The 1970s are all the rage right now in pop music, with both of the American songs of the summer, Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" and Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," offering distinctive takes on the dance music of the period (Nile Rodger's disco outfit CHIC and Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up, respectively).

But fitting right into that groovy 1970s niche is South Korean R&B singer JQ's new single "Tell Me 'Yes'."

Which although confusing in the punctuation department (not really sure why there are quotations around 'Yes') is nothing but precision in the rhythm section with the fake ivories of a Fender Rhodes rounding out the sound with sweet retro flare.

The percussive electric piano stabs are accentuated with the tight, virtuosic precision of a 1970s session musician.

In fact this quality of the horns, their jazz fusion quality for lack of a better term, makes "Tell Me 'Yes'" distinctive from Thicke and Daft Punk who are admittedly channeling funk masters of the 1970s in both colossal hits.

JQ's sound is closer to acts from the era like Steely Dan or Supertramp, artists that weren't afraid to throw a clarinet solo into a pop song.

As any fan of classic rock fan knows, especially when it came to Steely Dan's Becker and Fagen, rock bands with horn sections produced some of the most revered musical moments of the decade.

That's not to say there isn't also the sound of classic R&B in "Tell Me 'Yes', which debuted at number 49 on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 this week.

JQ has a soaring falsetto that makes it clear that he is well versed in Michael Jackson (who would have been 55 on Thursday) and Smoky Robinson.

Yet there is also the aggressive flow of rapper G.Tiger to keep the sound firmly routed in the present.

But it's a present that is just a bit funkier, dreamier than your average day.

Both men bring their best making "Tell Me 'Yes'" by JQ a trip worth taking.
