Why Park Jin Young, G-Dragon, and KARA Chose Monday for Their Song Release

What's so special about Monday?

These top artists all are scheduled to release their single on September 2nd. They all would peak at the top of music charts if they released their albums individually, but they are all choosing to release their songs on the same day. It's an invitation for fierce competition, and a very different approach to releasing music - most artists delay or have an early launch to avoid such competition.

This kind of competition also happened last June 29th when Brown Eyed Girls released their single on the same day as f(x). They are both top artists that would hit the top of the charts had they released on separate dates, but they released their singles on the same day and went through a fierce competition for the top spot.

The thing they have in common is that they are all releasing their singles on Monday. Releasing a single on Monday supersedes concerns about reaching the top of the charts and competing with other top artists. All big name artists have been releasing their singles on Mondays of late. 2NE1's "Falling in Love" was released on July 8th. EXO's "Growl" was released on August 5th, and Seungri's "Gotta Talk to U" was released on August 19th. These release dates were all Mondays. Park Jin Young's title single will be released on the Monday following his first single release, which is being released on a Monday as well.

Why Mondays? Experts are saying that weekend music programs that feature artists have a direct positive influence on the online music charts, which tally both the download and streaming numbers. Most artists that release their music on Mondays and become popular will be invited to perform on the weekend music shows.

But the weekend music program allows for another strategy, which is performing prior to releasing a single to be released after the weekend. 2NE1, EXO, f(x), Brown Eyed Girls, and Sunmi all chose to perform on stage prior to the release of their singles.

While a surprise release of a single may garner some popularity, there is danger of that popularity quickly diminishing and preventing a top chart spot on the following weekend's music programs. Performing prior to releasing a single allows for the viewer to be familiarized with the song before the next weekend's competition for the number 1 spot in the charts.

Barring songs like EXO's "Growl" which has become a national sensation, most hit singles only last 2-3 weeks on the charts before a newer single by a different artist takes their spot. This "week-long" debut might be the longest time they are allowed to appeal their music before the judgment of the viewers move them up or down the music charts.

Experts say that the fierce competition and the overall rise in skill among idol stars have made the goal of every release to get a number one spot. Anything less would be considered failing. Because of this, experts add, other strategies that help the Kpop stars clinch the number one spot will come out in the future as well.
