Teen Top, The KpopStarz Interview: The Guys Open Up About Internal Band Struggles And Auditioning For Shinhwa's Andy Lee

Although four of the six members of Teen Top are still young enough to be age appropriate for their band name, they have already carved out a niche for themselves within the K-pop world, with a little help from one of the genre's preeminent producers, Brave Brothers.

Brave Brothers, who has delivered chart-topping hits for major K-pop acts like 4Minute, Sistar and Big Bang, produced three out of the Teen Top's four EPs and wrote and produced the group's first full-length album "No. 1," released in February.

With the experienced hitmaker at the helm, the musical growth of the band has been rapid, as was demonstrated on their most recent EP, "Teen Top Class," released in late August.

Formed in 2010 by Andy Lee of Shinhwa, Teen Top has undeniably become a group to keep your eye on.

C.A.P., 20, Chunji, 20, L.Joe, 19, Niel, 19, Ricky, 18 and Changjo, 17 discussed their ongoing collaboration with Brave Brothers, what it was like auditioning for Andy and how their band dynamic wasn't always as jovial as it is now, in an exclusive interview with KpopStarz.

KpopStarz: What was it like auditioning for Shinhwa singer Andy Lee?

L.Joe: I was so nervous at the auditions [for Teen Top]. When I first met Andy, he was so kind and I was thankful for that. The auditions were open auditions and I found out the results on stage.

Niel: I was so nervous, I blew my audition.

Chunji: I was so excited and nervous at the same time. I wasn't able to show my full ability during the audition and I was scared of Andy at first.

C.A.P.: Everything was so new and interesting to me. I was nervous even after I found out that I had passed.

Ricky: It was so fun to see Andy in person. I was so nervous for the auditions.

Changjo: It was fun and I remember only thinking to do my best. I was so nervous that I don't even remember how it went.

KpopStarz: Your song "Don't I" has a sound that resembles late 1970s and early 1980s pop rock like Seals and Crofts and Men At Work. Did you make a conscious choice to dial in a more retro sound on that track or was it an accident?

L.Joe: Brave Brothers chose this song for us because he thought it would fit us well.

Chunji: He took his time to produce a great song for us.

Ricky:  The song matched well with our album concept.

Changjo: We wanted to create a song for the students.

KpopStarz: What is your band dynamic like offstage? Do you ever have difficulties getting along?

L.Joe: We are all great friends. In the beginning, we did fight a bit, but now we know each other so well that we don't fight that much.

Niel: Back in the day we did [have problems getting along] but not so much now.

Changjo: We fought so much that we now know each other's personalities well. We usually like to joke around with each other.

KpopStarz: What was your favorite song of the summer?

Niel: Our song, ["No Kidding" by Teen Top]! We are the best!

Chunji: I choose our song too. It is a powerful and fun song.

C.A.P.: "Gentleman" by Psy.

Ricky: 4Minute's "What's your Name?"

Changjo: I also agree [that the song of the summer was] 4Minute's "What's Your Name?" It was always stuck in my head.

KpopStarz: Which artists inspired you to become musicians?

L.Joe: I have always wanted to be involved in music. I grew up watching and listening to so many singers and started to have my dream of wanting to be a singer.

Niel: Big Bang is a group I idolize.

Chunji: Park Hyo Shin is my idol.

Ricky:  Big Bang's T.O.P is my idol. I want to be able to sing and act like him.

Changjo: The members of Big Bang and Shinhwa are my idols.

KpopStarz: What are you listening to these days?

C.A.P.: I listen to a lot of Wiz Khalifa's music.

Niel: I have been listening to a variety of different genres lately.

Changjo: I've been listening to songs that could work with choreography these days.

KpopStarz: Describe your experience performing at the two-day K-pop convention KCON in Los Angeles back in August?

Chunji: This was our comeback performance as well as our first debut in LA and so I was very nervous, yet excited.

L.Joe: The fans greeted us so warmly. I think that was why we worked even harder.

Niel: I was honored to be able to perform in the US for the first time. Many of our US fans supported us.

Changjo: I was surprised and thankful at all the support we received from fans.

C.A.P.: It was my first time in LA and I was so nervous. I made many great memories while out there.

KpopStarz: Niel, you own the coffee shop Café DaNi in Seoul and have said that you hope to open a gourmet restaurant. What goals do you have for your career as a restaurateur?

Niel: I'd like to add meat to the menu. My brother's dream is to be a chef. As his brother, I want to have a restaurant ready for him when he successfully becomes a chef.

KpopStarz: How is your new EP "Teen Top Class" different from your previous releases?

L. Joe: We tried hard to show a different [side of the group on "Teen Top Class"] for our fans. It was fun making this album.

Chunji: We tried hard to show our own style and color in this album.

C.A.P.: We wanted it to have a more free-spirited vibe.
