From Crazed Fans To Squeaky Clean Marketing, 40 Reddit Users Ponder The Current State Of K-Pop

A simple question posed by Reddit user Fruitcupcakes on Wednesday, triggered a provocative discussion about the South Korean music industry on the website.

"Do you have any issues with the current state of K-pop?" Fruitcupcakes asked in an open forum question that received over 40 user comments.

"The fans," was the first response, from Redditor Marrel. "I think the music is great, but I think the fan base and the culture is f*cking weird."

"I wouldn't say Korean culture is weird, just different," Reddit reader and self-confirmed K-pop fan Wansuiwansui responded.

"I'm not talking about Korean culture, I'm talking about K-pop culture," Marrel responded. "Take a look at the top YouTube comments on [some of] these K-pop songs."

User Masonvd believes the infamously overzealous behavior of some K-pop fans can be blamed on the age many of the genre's fan.

"It's young kids, and has nothing to do with K-pop," Mason wrote.

"It's no different than crazy Justin Bieber fans...one thing I don't get is why there are more crazy fan girls than boys. I obviously don't mean like YouTube comments, I'm talking the very small minority. I mean like sending period blood, crashing weddings crazy."

South Korean Reddit user EvenAStoppedClock believes that the fervor of some K-pop fans has a lot to do with the unrealistic expectations put forward in local marketing campaigns.

"It's the way idols are marketed here [in South Korea],"the fan wrote.

"It's a little different than in the Western market because in the West, people don't really keep the image of being pure, clean and available like they do in the East, if that makes sense. [Western stars] like Justin Bieber date and get tattoos and whatnot (not that I'm saying his fans are on board with it), but in the East even a rumor of dating can cause a lot of sh*t for the idols."

K-popper and Reddit user PizzaEatingPanda doesn't care about the politics of marketing, but rather the increasingly homogenized quality of the music.

"[My issue with the state of K-pop is] idol groups lacking a distinctive sound," wrote the fan.

"I think that the style of idol groups are defined much more by who their producers are than for their songs...which means that idol groups don't have that uniqueness anymore."
