NBA Opening Night Matchup: Philadelphia 76ers Stuns Defending Champions, Michael Carter-Williams Shocks NBA As The Rookie Played Like A Superstar On His First Game

Second night of the NBA opening night matchup as the Miami Heat falls short to the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers with the late-game efforts of Spencer Hawes and the amazing performance from rookie Michael Carter-Williams.

Following a good end in the preseason, where they finished with a 6-1 win-loss record, the Sixers continue to look good after a well fought opening game against the Miami Heat.

The game finished with a 114-110 score headlined by Spencer Hawe's late game heroics and the astonishing almost quadruple-double performance by the first round pick Michael Carter-Williams.

Brett Brown, Sixers head coach who was last year's runner-up's assistant coach, said that seeing the Miami Heat raise their championship banner and receiving their rings one night before their game was hard to handle for him.

"It was really hard," he said. "It surprised me how hard it was."

Possibly this opportunity of winning his first game with his new team against the defending champions gave the spark to retaliate for what happened last June.

The rookie MCW recorded 22 points, 12 assists, nine steals, seven rebounds and just one turnover in front of 19,523 fans including Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley and other Philadelphia greats who were able to witness this feat following a retirement announcement by possibly future Hall-of-Famer Allen Iverson in Wells Fargo Center.

Last quadruple-double stats recorded in the NBA was in Feb. 17, 1994 made by David Robinson who had 34 points, 10 assists, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks.

Spencer Hawes on the other hand tallied 24 points including a late game-winning basket to get past the Heat in the last two minutes of the game.

Miami suffered a close game defeat without the help of Dwyane Wade who is sidelined during the game with both knees wrapped in ice. Wade who didn't play said the coaches and even himself decided to not push his self into playing and just continue recovering from a sprained ankle and bruised knees acquired in the preseason.

"It was not pre-planned, it was something our trainers and coaches came to me with," the three-time champion guard said. "It's early in the season, it's just a precaution."

LeBron James missed the help of his teammate but said he respects his decision as it is for his own good, as long as he fully recovers from his injuries.

"If he needs to take the second game of the season, the 30th game, 50th game, 80th game, that's the way it is," the finals MVP said.
