‘K-Pop Star 3’ Sets Itself Apart With Humor – Why It’s Better Than Other Audition Programs

SBS' "K-Pop Star" underwent a successful renovation, and it as now set itself apart.

By reducing the stress-inducing tension and making the audition a far more enjoyable atmosphere, "K-Pop Star 3" has become a far more entertaining show that viewers can watch without being stressed out themselves. There were concerns when Yoo Hee Yeol replaced BoA as the third panel judge, but his unique sense of humor has revived the show into a successful launching of a third season. His presence has lightened up the mood of Park Jin Young and Yang Hyun Suk as well.

The second episode of "K-Pop Star 3" that aired on December 1st hints at this change. Contestants such as Jang Hanna, Farm Kids, and the Lee sisters were the highlighted contestants of the show.

There was virtually no tension or fear on the contestant's faces. Instead, each contestant soaked in the lightened mood and was able to showcase their talents completely. The Lee sisters took the stage individually and mesmerized the judges by the dances. Jang Hanna's ability to sing to a groove also wowed the judges.

Farm Kids brought Park Jin Young to tears. The two main singers were highly skilled, but the percussionist who brought a Cajon that he made himself could not keep the beat. Park Jin Young, Yang Hyun Suk, and Yoo Hee Yeol broke down in laughter, and Park Jin Young literally was tearing up from laughter.

It was certainly a different atmosphere than what the audiences were used to from audition programs.

Yoo Hee Yeol's influence on the other two judges cannot be ignored. Yang Hyun Suk routinely commented throughout the first two episodes that Yoo Hee Yeol is genuinely humorous. Yoo Hee Yeol, who is friends with Park Jin Young, constantly jabbed at Park Jin Young's tough method of judging, inducing humorous responses from Park Jin Young and Yang Hyun Suk.

He even made the contestants laugh. He commented, "No one like you visits my company for an audition. I was just mesmerized," when the Lee sisters showed up with their dancing prowess.

The two judges, softened up by Yoo Hee Yeol's influence, also made the contestants feel welcome. Yang Hyun Suk made well-received joke about his newly found interest in chefs and cooks when a Chinese contestant who happens to be a chef came in to audition, saying, "I'm getting more and more interested in cooking because I'm dissatisfied with the home cooking (of my wife)."

Park Jin Young remained true to his professional and knowledgeable self, but even his usually harsh comments were toned down. He told the Farm Kids that they both need and can't succeed with the percussionist, because while he is the charismatic one of the bunch, his skill level weighs them down. To a particular female contestant, he commented that her spine seems like it's in disarray.

One of the contestants that came back from Season 1 commented that Park Jin Young told her to learn to sing all over again. Park Jin Young was surprised and asked her if she remembers him telling her why she had to do that, to which she replied, "You never told me."

While each member brings a different element to the table, their common love for finding new talent and enjoying musical endeavors is bringing joy to the viewers to watch the show. If the show can continue on this new and exciting direction, "K-Pop Star 3" will certainly be able to set itself apart from other shows of its kind.
