'Pretty Little Liars' Star Troian Bellisario Admits Harming And Starving Herself During Teenage Years; How Similar Is Her Experience With Spencer Hastings’ Perfectionist Tendencies?
Known as the overachiever Spencer Hastings in the hit series 'Pretty Little Liars', Troian Bellisario recently confessed about her self-harming tendencies as a teenager. While the 28-year-old actress is the daughter of Hollywood producers Donald Bellisario and Deborah Pratt, she admitted her intense need to pressure herself as a junior high school student.
"I started self-harming when I was a junior. I would withhold food or withhold going out with my friends, based on how well I did that day in school," confessed Bellisario in an interview with Seventeen magazine.
Due to her yearning for organization, she resorted to having a punishment system: "I didn't know what was right and what was wrong, so I think I created this bizarre system of checks and balances to create order in my world. But it really backfired."
Just like her character Spencer Hastings, Bellisario lived a comfortable life since her parents are mainly responsible for famed shows including 'Family Guy', 'NCIS', 'Quantum Leap', and 'Battlestar Galactica'. Still, such comfort did not exempt her from having insecurities:
"Sometimes I feel like I'm trying too hard, like I don't belong. I just look around at Lucy [Hale], Shay [Mitchell], and Ashley [Benson], and I'm just like, 'Why am I on this show?' Sometimes I've felt like a fraud. Like, I'm not like these other girls - I don't dress like that and don't know how to do my hair," she confessed.
Despite her shortcomings, the Los Angeles-born actress says that she copes with Tinseltown's pressures by dressing up like herself the minute she leaves PLL's set: "The minute I'm off that stage, I try to get as "me" as possible. I do that by piling on my black eyeliner, and I put on my ripped tights. Dressing like myself again helps."
Bellisario's brave interview will be released this coming February by Seventeen Magazine.
