Profile Of A K-Pop Fan: Polish Teen Malwina Galicka On How Meeting HaYun Convinced Her To Start The Global Icon International Fanclub

NAME: Malwina Galicka

AGE: 19

LIVES: Wolomin, Poland

CURRENTLY: College student

FAN CREDENTIALS: Galicka is the founder Global Icon International Fanclub. Created to follow the five-member girl group who made their debut in April, the fan club has a website, a Twitter account and a Facebook page with over 10,000 likes. According to the teen, the idea to start the group was prompted by a personal interaction with one of the band members. "I decided to open the fan club after my first private chat with HaYun," Galicka said. "I will never forget how surprised she was when I told her which country I'm from. She said I was the very first Polish fan she had spoken to and she gave me a nickname, Mina, which I still use. Several days after that chat, I also had a chance to talk with two other members, EunJi and AI. I started to translate all band news and messages from them for the fan club, even if my Korean and English is not as good as I'd like it to be. My first huge surprise was when HaYun mentioned my name in one of the very first video interviews the group gave. Seriously, I almost cried because of that. Later, the whole group started to mention me in interviews more often, no matter if it was radio show or video interview. It always made me so happy when I heard how thankful they are for my work and with the fan club and my passion." She is also the administrator of a Facebook page for Polish K-pop fans.

INTRO TO K-POP: "I found out about K-pop during my summer holidays in 2009," Galicka said. "It was by accident. At that time I was huge fan of anime and I was registered on a forum for anime fans. One day, one of my friends from the forum sent me a song. It was a 'Lollipop' by Big Bang and 2NE1. I thought it was nice, funny and such a colorful video. But it sounded like a lot of the pop music in Poland. I thought it was nice, but nothing more. I used to listen this song many times but I never felt like 'I want to know more K-pop.' But I started to listen to more of Big Bang's songs, some 2NE1's tracks and SHINee's 'Lucifer.' It was a way to make my playlist more colorful because of the exotic language. Then in 2012, many of my friends were crazy about "Fantastic Baby" by Big Bang. I don't like popular things, so I didn't want to check it out. But finally I decided to listen to it and I totally fell in love in K-pop." Galika has a message to any of her friends or family members who think her love of K-pop is only a phase. "I know a lot of people who thought it would be only a temporary mania, my huge spazz over K-pop," she said. "But they were so wrong! I started to check out more and more songs by Big Bang and other groups. I'm a huge fan of K-pop to this day and I will be for many years."

FAVORITE GROUP: Global Icon

WHY GLOBAL ICON IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD: "I love new rookie group Global Icon and I focus on them the most," Galicka said. "They attracted my attention with their unique style. They are not a typical girl group. Actually they call themselves a "boyish hip girl group." I really like this concept and I also like their songs and personalities."

BEST GLOBAL ICON SONG: "Beatles."

FAVORITE SOLO ARTIST: Ailee

"She is such a talented girl," Galicka said. "She is the perfect example of a person who has great singing skills." Despite the recent two-month hiatus Ailee was forced into back in November when the New Jersey-based website allkpop posted unauthorized nude photos of the singer; the Polish teen believes her star is on the rise. "That scandal won't destroy her career, because people care about her voice and the present time, not the past," Galicka said. "Everyone makes mistakes."

FAVORITE AILEE SONG: "Heaven"

K-POP FUTURE PLANS: When it comes to her goals within the world of K-pop, Galicka certainly isn't thinking small. "A few months ago, I started to attend a Korean language course," she said. "I'd like to go to Korea, I think, like every K-pop fan. I'd like to meet with Global Icon, no matter if it's in my country or in theirs. I'm not good at singing or dancing, but I'm good at organizational stuff. I think I would be able to work at a Korean record label, maybe at Global Icon's label Simtong Entertainment, or maybe even something bigger--maybe the manager of Global Icon? Anything is possible. I just need to focus on learning Korean first. That's the biggest problem."
