Will 'Gangnam Style' Reach 2 Billion Views Before Psy Releases His Next Album?

A year and a half after the release of the wildly famous international hit song "Gangnam Style" was released and the record-breaking video is about to reach another major milestone.

When South Korean rapper Psy dropped his sixth album in the summer of 2012, the album's title track was a silly one and never intended to be the world's gateway to K-Pop. Then the internet happened.

Armed with a catchy hook and an irresistibly fun and easy-to-imitate dance move, Psy started out quiet enough - a comical music video that had most of South Korea laughing through the summer. Flash forward a few months and "Gangnam Style" started its journey of viral video super-fame and the 36-year-old star became the world's most recognizable Korean.

By the end of 2012, "Gangnam Style" and Psy broke 1 billion views, solidifying its place as the most-viewed video on YouTube of all time (by a long shot too as the number two spot has been tightly held by Canadian pop star Justin Bieber's "Baby" which is still under the 1 billion mark).

In April 2013, "Gangnam Style" toppled over 1.5 billion views and on February 8, 2014 the video had crossed the 1.9 billion mark.

Now, a couple weeks later and Psy is still steadily climbing toward 2 billion with numbers above 1.91 billion. It surely won't be long before 2 billion is a reality.

And Psy's fame does not stop there. His follow-up single "Gentleman" is also a major player on YouTube's list of the most viewed videos, coming in at number seven with nearly 650 million views.

The popularity of Psy and his music helped push the Korean Wave (the spread of South Korean pop culture across the globe) into the American mainstream, helping to fling open the doors for other K-Pop artists like his YG Entertainment label-mates G-Dragon and 2NE1, nine-member girl group Girls' Generation, and many others.

Not only has "Gangnam Style" earned Psy a long list of awards (including a Guinness world record), but has helped him create working relationships with some of the world's biggest stars - including YouTube rival Justin Bieber.

The unlikely Korean star has been in the company of world leaders (such as US President Barak Obama and UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon), legendary rock stars (like Steven Tyler and Keith Richards), and some of Hollywood's finest (including Hugh Jackman and Gwyneth Paltrow).

Now as he takes his time to prepare for his next album, a project that was due out this month but is taking a bit longer to perfect, Psy is eagerly watching a waiting for the song that started all his international success to reach its next major milestone.

With no release date for album number seven set in stone, Psy has let fans know he is serious about what the future has in store.  His label, YG Entertainment, has said that the "Gentleman" follow-up single will be more akin to his personal style and that the new release will contain a variety of collaborative efforts from some very major stars.

Psy himself has been busy at work creating an extensive number of tunes from which to choose the new album's tracks, but locking down "the next big hit" is proving to be no easy task, especially with the whole world watching.

The question remains - what will come first, 2 billion views or a new album?

Stay tuned for more Psy updates and in the meantime, help "Gangnam Style" reach 2 billion views by heading over to Psy's official YouTube channel and checking it out (again, and again, and again).
