K-Pop Beyond The Charts: With Shades Of Frank Ocean, ILLAP's 'Calm' Is Trippy Hip-Hop Worth Hearing [VIDEO]

When singer Frank Ocean released the Grammy-winning "channel ORANGE" album in 2012, it wasn't just an innovative musical statement in terms of the artist who was willing to throw out the rulebook regarding conventions of song arranging, or even, song length.

Rather, the boldness of "channel ORANGE" was in Ocean's willingness to create a vibe that was far more atmospheric than the dance floor romps he had become famous for delivering the hooks on for rap giants like Kanye West and Jay-Z.

Approaching the mic with a similar courage to dare to not destroy subwoofers, is South Korean hip-hop group ILLAP.

And though the group boasts nowhere near the kind of profile Ocean had when he released "channel ORANGE," (their Facebook page, created earlier this month, has under 200 likes) the members of ILLAP stand united with the American singer in their restless experimentation and pursuit of grooves that wouldn't fly with most dance club DJs.

This is not "throw your hands in the air, wave them like you just don't care" hip-hop. But aren't we all burnt out on that sort of thing anyway?

ILLAP creates a sound that is soothing, yet with a dark urban edge. Like sunrise in the projects, the effect is both beautiful and bittersweet.

There is something amazing about a song like "Calm" that slows life down for a moment and allows you to breathe. It gives you a second to collect your thoughts.

But don't get it twisted, there are still enough raps (both slowed down and rapid-fire) in this song to keep "Calm" from entering sleepy time territory.

Refreshing would be a better word for it.
