4MINUTE Directly Comments On Misunderstandings, Prejudice, And Goals

4MINUTE is a sexy girl group with a strong performance, intense sound, and charisma that can captivate the audience. They're sometimes even called 'women warriors'. 4MINUTE has never used the 'cute concept', which every girl group has done at least once.

Last year they lightened the mood with their song "What's Your Name". On the 17th this month they challenged themselves to a comic concept with "Whatcha Doin' Today". Regarding this transformation, 4MINUTE members explained, "We wanted to be more approachable."

It's already been 6 years since the girl debuted. In a recent interview they shared their thoughts on their own image, controversies, and future goals.

"All of the 4MINUTE members have never appeared altogether on a broadcast entertainment program. Maybe that's the reason why, but people think that we don't really talk. But we're actually really funny." (HyunA)

"People just look at our image and outward appearance and say that it seems like we don't have a good personality, that we're not very polite, or that we give off too strong an energy. However, anyone in our company can tell you that we are just like the 'neighborhood kids the next town over.' Since we're so misunderstood, even our parents get upset." (Ga Yoon)

"That's why we want to do a reality program. If we appeared in such a program, then we would be able to naturally reveal our true personalities." (Jeon Ji Yoon)

"But it is true that our members are a little shy in front of strangers. That's why even though it's been 6 years since our debut, we don't have many celebrity friends. When we go for a music program we usually stay in our waiting room. I really want to make some celebrity friends. (Laughter)" (Nam Ji Hyun)

"'Running Man', 'Radio Star', 'Happy Together', whoever calls us we'll go anywhere. No matter what. We never showed off our sense of entertainment, and we want to express our charm." (Kwon So Hyun)

"That's why we suggested doing the song 'Whatcha Doin' Today', which the public can easily along to. We used to do sexy or cool songs before we sang 'What's Your Name'. The public approached us with a stronger familiarity. It was cool. We wanted more of that intimacy. That's why we're aspiring to get closer to the public." (HyunA)

"We laughed all throughout our music video shoot. We came up with the ideas for everything from the props to the set. Since we had never done a funny concept, we started to put little parts here and there while filming. That's actually how we usually play." (Ga Yoon)

"There are lots of lacking scenes, too, probably because we are girls. That's why we never imagined that we'd be wrapped up in a sexuality controversy. Honestly I thought that 4MINUTE was being a little weaker this time around." (Jeon Ji Yoon)

"HyunA probably did not have that kind of intention, but since she personally practices sexy dance a lot, it probably came out naturally. (Laughter) It's such a small part, and we never imagined it would become such a big issue." (Nam Ji Hyun)

"I think I just did wrong. I told the members I was sorry. They in return said thanks, laughed about it, and let it go. To be honest I wanted to completely let go in the music video. I wanted to show you a cool side through my brokenness. If I wasn't confident on stage then I would have been more concerned and upset, but since I'm confident on stage I thought, 'I need to show them more. That's how I'll make them understand.' That's why I'm practicing that much harder." (HyunA)

"Until now we would add our thoughts onto schedules or concepts planned by the agency. But this time we had a say in everything from the time we first received the song. Jacket shoot, calendar design album, music video, costume, attire, there's not even one part we did not take part in." (Ga Yoon)

"For the songs in this album, we asked that all of them be songs we can sing at a concert. The unit's been split 2:3. There's a fan song, too. That's why we really want to hold a concert. We want to put on a concert where the audience can come, enjoy themselves, and go home drenched in sweat." (Jeon Ji Yoon)

"Until now we've only put on 'cool' performances. But as we shared the stage with DJ DOC members, we changed. 4MINUTE's performances are split into before and after. Since we show off our choreography on broadcast, when we're at festivals or events, we try to create an exciting atmosphere. DJ DOC told us, 'When you play you have to first go crazy. That way the audience can join you and have a crazy fun time.' We want to hold that kind of concert, too." (Ga Yoon)

"I think size doesn't matter. We ourselves know that our fandom isn't as big as that of boy groups. Whether it be a small theater or mid-sized concert venue, we want to go onstage and show you things that we weren't able to showcase through broadcast television." (HyunA)
