Crayon Pop and Orange Caramel Are Weird On Purpose

"Sa-cha-won(4th Dimension)" is a term used by young Koreans to denote someone who is weird. That is, most of the people who are dubbed "sa-cha-won" are unique and hard to understand.

When you think about the most "sa-cha-won" K-Pop star today, Crayon Pop may immediately come to your mind. Their concept, while weird and lame, was also absolutely popular. Following their precedence, After School's unit group Orange Caramel is taking the weird road to popularity.

Orange Caramel's previous title song "Lipstick" was well loved because the song was cute, catchy, and incorporated the Korean genre of "trot" music. They are the most successful "unit group", or a group that's been formed within a group. They are one of the few groups that drove their popularity solely by the power of their music, independent of any appearances on the weekend variety shows.

That is, their popularity was genuine and not manufactured. However, their newest single "Catallena" has been drawing some heat because of their album concept. Following Crayon Pop's brand of "weird", Orange Caramel's newest concept is leaving their fans scratching their heads.

The concept for their third single "Catallena" is sushi. The part that has fans scratching their heads is that the three members of Orange Caramel are dressed up as human sushi that are individually packaged, ready-to-eat. They perform their songs dressed like like Sushi, and frankly, the concept is borderline creepy.

"Catallena" is a fusion disco song that mixes in "Jutti Meri", a traditional Punjabi song. While the majority of the listeners think the song is too weird, the song in itself is rather catchy and seems to have the potential to be a big hit.

The problem is the album concept. Why they chose to be "human sushi" is beyond anyone's guess, but KBS has officially declared the video unfit to air, claiming the video is "a mockery of human life" that is "unfit for children and teenagers to consume".

Pledis entertainment, Orange Caramel's entertainment company, has since changed their album concept. MBC and SBS has since approved the video.

There are some, such as the popular critic Jin Joong Kwon, who stated that Orange Caramel is not the problem but the people who immediately pass judgment on someone's creative process is the real problem.

These and other opinions has driven "Catallena" to the center of discussion concerning where the artistic freedom ends and public responsibility begins. These discussions have not been good for Orange Caramel and "Catallena" who have since been labelled "weird", "odd", and "sa-cha-won".

Of course, Orange Caramel's concept has never been to be beautiful like Girls' Generation. They've always belonged with other "sa-cha-won" groups like Crayon Pop and PSY.

Their actual popularity hasn't diminished, either. They are still good enough to compete with the likes of Girls' Generation and 2NE1 on the weekend music programs. It's just a shame that their music video and album concept are at the heart of controversy.

Sometimes the strange and unique concept for a song drives up its value. This was true for Crayon Pop's "helmet" concept. However, something like this is taking a concept too far.

With all this talk about Orange Caramel and their album concept, it will be interesting to see what kind of concept Crayon Pop will be coming back with on their upcoming single, "Uh-Ee".
