Dynamic Duo Take Over D.C.'s Kennedy Center For 'One Mic'

Choiza and Gaeko of K-Hip Hop's Dynamic Duo led a commanding performance on day two of the One Mic:Hip Hop Culture Worldwide festival at Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center. As the founders of Amoeba Culture and preeminent leaders in Korean hip hop, Dynamic Duo were an apropos choice to represent Korea at a world hip hop festival. I am generally more comfortable within the throng of fans, but my experience at Kennedy Center provided an unique perspective into the cross-generational fandom that Dynamic Duo has established. Dynamic Duo is the epitome of the global reach of hip hop culture which was best exemplified by elder guests from the U.S. Korean embassy in the audience, who were throwing their hands in the air in time to Gaeko and Choiza's rhymes. This was a slightly surreal experience which undoubtedly exceeded my expectations.

Prior to seeing Dynamic Duo perform at Kennedy Center and during their question and answer fan engagement on March 27, I had the privilege of seeing them perform one of the first stages at KCON 2013. While their previous performances displayed the prowess of the group, Dynamic Duo completed commanded the Millennium Stage at Kennedy Center on March 28. Dynamic Duo appeared to be fueled by the raucousness of the exclusively K-Hip Hop audience and projected a contagious energy. The most pivotal points of the night were when the crowd forgot about their recording the performances on their smart phones and tablets, while immersing themselves in the music.

Dynamic Duo kicked off the night with Return of the Kings, then segued to one of my personal favorites Three Dopeboyz. Dymanic Duo follwed up Three Dopeboyz with a mashup medley of Lee Dae Ho followed by Shoot Goal In and So Good. By the time So Good was introduced the crowd was completely pumped up. Gaeko and Choiza then performed Life Is Good and Soul Food. Dynamic Duo fed off the energy of the predominantly Korean crowd, which was peppered by other ethnic groups of American fans. It was truly inspiring to see the crowd respond to Dynamic Duo's call and response prior to their performance of the hit BAAAM. Dynamic Duo followed up BAAAM with Go Back, Question Mark, and Ring My Bell, which samples the 1979 disco jingle by Anita Wall.

Dynamic Duo topped off the night with Fireworks and the weekend anthem Friday Night. Dynamic Duo definitely put on an unforgettable performance. Fans of the group will have an opportunity to check them out at the upcoming LA K-Pop Festival or can watch their Kennedy Center performance online. Choiza and Gaeko were amazing artists to meet in person. Prior to their Kennedy Center performance, Dynamic Duo provided an interview to Kpopstarz during their Q & A session through the Korean embassy in D.C., which is coming soon.

Special thanks to NomadicWax and Amanda Macchia Photography for the photos.  Thank you also Kennedy Center for the opportunity to attend Dynamic Duo's performance.
