Are Weekend Variety Shows Switching Out Members As A Strategy?

While weekend variety shows that do not undergo any change are often cancelled and changed out for a new show, it's difficult to gauge the amount of change necessary for the popularity of the show to continue.

Shows that invite new guests every week are called out as "sellouts", but inviting new guests and creating content befitting those guests is a good way to bring about the necessary "tweak" needed to breathe new life into the shows.

What else can the TV stations do to breathe new life into their staple weekend variety shows? Most shows are opting to change the members out with new faces. However, this, too has been giving mixed results. While the right casting can be good for the life of the show, an unexpected change in the cast can also bring aversion from the fans.

KBS's "One Night Two Days" was one of the programs that flushed out their cast members. Aside from Cha Tae Hyun and Kim Jong Min, four of the previous members were flushed out for four new members. "One Night Two Days" received praise from the fans and critics alike for putting together a unique cast who were highly entertaining. They returned to the top as the most watched show on Sunday nights.

In the case of MBC's "Dad, Where Are We Going" which is in direct competition with "One Night Two Days" because of their time slot, their member change became a disaster. The second season invited 6 families for the show, but one father-daughter couple had to drop out amid accusations of a politically messy past. The scandal that ensued the member change are forcing the producers of "Dad, Where Are We Going" to consider going with just a five-family cast member. Their ratings dipped into single digits.

MBC's "Real Men" benefited from their new cast members, with Super Junior M's Henry emerging as a "blue-chip" entertainer. It is safe to say that the casting of Henry has revived a show that was due to be cut from the weekend programming for a lack of change. Henry and new members K.Will and Park Gun Hyung give the show a new comical dynamic.

KBS's "The Human Condition" also announced that they will be changing out the cast very soon.

The reasoning behind the change in the cast has to do with premise of the show, which is to take away one thing that people deem is necessary for everyday life (phone, cars, computers and the like) in order to attempt to rediscover the values that were lost to the introduction of these events. The members were so successful at adapting to a life without technology and basic, expected amenities that the show's premise was becoming too easy for the previous members.

SBS's "Running Man" and MBC's "Infinite Challenge" have kept the same cast member since the inception of the show. They are also criticized for their lack of change, but each character in the shows has gained international following. With such immense popularity, it will be difficult to make any major changes in these shows.
