INTRO TO K-POP: Thompson, who says her friends call her "Geli," clearly remembers exactly when and why she first decided to listen to South Korean pop music. "I was bored with American music," she said. "I even listened to trashy, vulgar club music. But when I was 15, a friend of mine showed me SHINee's music video for 'Lucifer' and I was hooked from then on."

BIGGEST K-POP MOMENT: "In November of 2011, I got to see Big Bang live in Newark, N.J. Coincidentally, I even got to stay in the hotel they stayed in when they filmed the videos for 'Blue' and 'Bad Boy,' she said. "I saw a lot of people in the hotel with Walkie Talkies. So, even though I didn't see them, I'd like to think they were there at least one night. The concert was epic! My favorite part was when they sang 'Haru Haru.' They stopped singing at one point to hear all the fans, fans from all parts of the world, who sang the song beautifully in Korean. They were actually shocked. I could never forget that day."

THE DIFFERENCE: "K-Pop is more industrialized than pop music in other countries," Thompson said. "I always find it hard to explain since the music has different influences.

FAVORITE GROUP: Teen Top

WHY TEEN TOP IS HER TOP PICK: "I've been an Angel [the name for group's fan club] since the beginning, when we were known as Andromedas," Thompson said. "I think my reason for liking them so much is because I've seen them grow and I've grown along with them. I was a sophomore in high school when they debuted, back in 2010. Now I'm a college student, almost done with the year and they're going around the world for a big tour."

FAVORITE TEEN TOP SONGS: "Beautiful Girl" and "Shake It!"

"I can't choose between two songs off of their album, 'Beautiful Girl' and 'Shake It!' she said. "'Beautiful Girl' is a cute song and it shows off everyone's voice perfectly. 'Shake It!' is such a good song that I even came up with an idea for a music video that would give the video for 'Miss Right' a better explanation. But I'm just odd like that."

FAVORITE SOLO ARTIST: Seungri of Big Bang

WHY: "When Big Bang does solo activities, most people anticipate the work of the mysterious Kwon Jiyong," Thompson said, referring to the Big Bang frontman and producer that most fans know simply as G-Dragon. "But I am always the most excited for Seungri's solo efforts. He has a nice voice and his moves are way smoother than his bandmate Taeyang's. Plus his goofy personality is always great to see when he does variety shows and stuff."

FAVORITE SEUNGRI SONG: "Open Window" featuring G-Dragon

WHY: "My favorite Seungri song is "Open Window" from his first album," she said. "It is perfect to listen to at any time. And who could forget G-Dragon's suave little verse?"

FUTURE PLANS: "For the past year, I've had the idea to open a K-pop or Hallyu-themed cafe in Raleigh, N.C.," Thompson said. "I didn't think the idea would sell. But one day, I asked a bunch of people and posted the idea on [the online Asian entertainment message board] Kayoforum and I found I had support for the idea. I've been saving up money ever since and I plan on opening it by the time I graduate from college. But until then, I'm going to start an online K-pop radio station."

ADVICE FOR OTHER FANS: "Fans should get a taste of every genre in Korea," she said. "The indie scene is awesome. I recommend the bands Bye Bye Sea, 10cm, Daybreak, Monni and Busker Busker. The mainstream rock scene is great too. I recommend Yellow Monsters, The Pony, No Brain and Cherry Filter. Artists from the South Korean hip-hop scene are often featured in K-pop songs, but the rappers by themselves have such good stuff.  Rappers like Dok2, Verbal Jint, Yoon Mirae, Tiger JK, Leessang and Crucial Star have been really influential."
