Must See K-Pop Idol TV In May 2014

Korean television is overflowing with programs featuring some of the most dynamic and quirky idols, following a slow period for K-Drama and K-Variety. Kim Jaejoong delivers a no-holds barred performance as a Lothario gangster in the MBC Monday-Tuesday drama “Triangle”. The SBS scripted reality show “Roommates” is hilarious with the adorable and dorky 4-D personalities of 2NE1's Park Bom, EXO's Chan Yeol, and Seo Kang Joon of 5urprise creating one bizarre scenario after another. While “EXO Showtime” presented the group in a variety show setting that was more removed from their performance persona, “XOXO” provides audiences with a documentary-like perspective on their recent comeback. After an absence due to the Sewol Ferry accident, K-Drama and K-Variety is back in full force.

Monday-Tuesday are the strongest days for prime time in May.

“Triangle” and “Doctor Stranger” made strong debuts on May 5, with both representing the strongest all-round casts of currently airing weekday dramas. “Triangle” is a tale of three brothers who are separated but begin to enter into a collision course with one another. “Triangle” reaps the reward of a large viewership due to JYJ's Jaejoong. In “Triangle” Jaejoong extends himself into uncharted territory and plays Jang Dong Chul, a suave con man with gusto. While one of the greatest benefits of watching “Triangle” may be the seemingly endless scenes that feature Jaejoong partially naked, a strong cast help to complete the drama.

Lee Beom Soo sheds the milk toast image he cultivated in “The Prime Minister and I” to portray Jang Dong Soo, a detective with anger management issues. ZE:A's Im Siwan is the emotionally fragile chaebol, Jang Dong Chul. Jang Dong Chul is a role that may have been filled by Jaejoong, in the past which helps add to the believability within the casting. “Triangle” airs on Monday-Tuesday in the 22:00 time slot on MBC.

“Doctor Stranger” is a political espionage medical drama that tugs at the heartstrings. Lee Jong Suk portrays Park Hoon, a doctor who was kidnapped from South Korean and trained within North Korea. While in North Korea, Park Hoon becomes an acclaimed surgeon, following in the foot steps of his father. Park Hoon escapes to South Korea, leaving behind his first love, Song Jae Hee (Jin Se Yeon). Park Hae Jin of “You Who Came From The Stars” and Kang Sora round out the central cast, while SISTAR's Bora maintains a supporting role. “Doctor Stranger” airs on Monday-Tuesday in the 21:55 time slot on SBS.

'You're All Surrounded' is the standout for Wednesday-Thursday.

Park Min Young has made her return to the K-Drama with “A New Leaf”, the Wednesday-Thursday drama which witnessed a ratings drop on May 7. By contrast, “You're All Surrounded” made a strong debut on May 7 with Cha Seung Won and Lee Seung Gi leading the cast. While Cha Seung Won has ventured into a diverse cache of roles, Lee Seung Gi generally portrays the nice guy. In “You're All Surrounded”, Lee Seung Gi breaks his normal K-Drama persona as the arrogant but intelligent junior detective Eun Dae Koo. Cha Seung Won is Seo Pan Seok, the reluctant leader of the rookie detectives. Go Ara is the scrappy tomboy detective Eo Soo Sun, while Ahn Jae Hyeon goes full flower boy as Park Tae Il.

Friday nights are for Kim Heechul and EXO!

On May 9, SM Entertainment took over Friday nights as “Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team” starring Super Junior's Kim Heechul debuted on tvN and EXO returned to reality television with their Mnet docu-drama “XOXO”. “Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team” is a fantasy time jump drama in which three twenty-something detectives are transformed into septuagenarians, with Park Jung Woo (Kim Heechul) as the exception. Choi Jin Hyuk (Lee Joon Hyuk) and Park Doo Shik (Jun Kang Suk) “Emergency Couple” are joined by “Roommates” Park Min Woo (Han Won Bin) as the twenty-something detectives. Veteran actors Lee Soon Jae (elder Lee Joon Hyuk) , Byun Hee Bong (elder Jun Kang Suk), and Jang Kwang (elder Han Won Bin) help fill this quirky comedy with laughs.

'Roommates' takes 'The Real World' concept and makes it ten times better.

Sundays are now filled with idol driven laughs thanks to the SBS reality program “Roommates”. “Roommates” has struggled with ratings in Korea, but is one of the interesting concepts in recent variety programs. While the blending of the cast is interesting, the three standouts of the program are idols. Park Bom, Chan Yeol, and Seo Kang Joon should honestly get their own spin off show because together and separate they represent three of most hilarious idols on television.

The funniest people are those who are unintentionally quirky and that summarizes Bom, Chan Yeol, and Seo Kang Joon. Fans of 2NE1 have witnessed snippets of Bom's eating and sleeping habits in the past, but “Roommates” sheds new light on her dorky appeal. The same can be said for Chan Yeol and Seo Kang Joon, whose dialogue is wonky enough that is most likely not scripted. “Roommates” airs Sundays on SBS.
