M.I.B Moves Beyond Their Idol Image To Deliver Solid Hip-Hop In 'The Maginot Line'

It has now been about six weeks since idol group M.I.B released their latest album The Maginot Line, and perhaps because it is juxtaposed between their K-Pop looks and their passion for the hip-hop sound, the whole project has, unfortunately, been largely overlooked.

And that is really a shame, because it is actually very well done.

Finding their places in the broad and diverse realm of K-Pop, the members of M.I.B, short for Most Increible Busters, first and foremost see themselves as hip-hop artists. However, the music promotion system in Korea, for the most part, is rather limited and caters mostly toward fans looking for idols in the traditional sense of the word - meaning that artists like M.I.B are often times passed up for adorable crooners with coordinating outfits and perfectly choreographed dance moves.

Although recently there has been a noticeable shift. Nowadays, it is commonplace for a K-Pop song to also include a rap verse and a lot of big name Korean hip-hop artists are teaming up with idol singers Top idol stars like Big Bang and 2NE1 leaders G-Dragon and CL have been branching out by making hip-hop solo albums and working with rap icons from around the world.

And then there is M.I.B, a quartet of talent under Jungle Entertainment, former label home to hip-hop icon Tiger JK. Since their debut in 2011, the group has tried to find their place among the growing number of K-Pop acts vying to sell records and climb to the top of the charts. But with their second studio album, M.I.B has created something that is true to how they see themselves.

"We just wanted to do hip-hop," explained M.I.B leader 5Zic in a recent interview with Mwave. "That's where we put the emphasis - with the exception of the title track. For the rest of the tracks, we wanted to do hip-hop."

And hip-hop they certainly did. All four members were on deck for The Maginot Line production and not only wrote and composed all the tracks, but also produced the entire album themselves.

Each of the nine tracks from The Maginot Line is intricate and engaging - easy for the listener to get swept up in. And although they take on different elements and melodies, they still weave together to create a fluid album from start to finish.

The Maginot Line is cohesive, fun, and full of wonderful performances from all four M.I.B members making the record sales seem alarmingly low despite being nearly double those of their last release.

The lead single, "Chisa Bounce," while incredibly catchy, is by far the weakest track on the album and also proved to be a record low for the group in terms of digital sales.

"Chisa Bounce" was an idea the guys had been throwing around since their trainee days. "We always talked about how something like this would be fun," explained SIMS. "But after trying other things, I think this time we were able to do it how we wanted." And in that vein, the song certainly has a place among the other tracks on The Maginot Line.

So while M.I.B's newest album has not gotten the attention from fans that it deserves, it is such a meaningful and carefully well done project from the group, it should not be overlooked for its quality.
