Stanislas Wawrinka Tattoo Meaning: The Rise Of Tennis’ Number Two Man

Victory at last came to Stanislas Wawrinka. And this may be thanks to his tattoo that fueled him with indefatigable positive thinking. The 29-year-old Wawrinka was facing the life of a tennis player, who came short of true glory, when he defeated top seeded Rafael Nadal in Australian Open 2014. His comeback was the biggest upset in recent tennis history. What's the meaning of Stanislas Wawrinka's forearm tattoo?

His tattoo is a quotation from Samuel Beckett, who wrote about the dark and bleak world he saw post World War II. Wawrinka's tattoo reads in blue script: "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail Better."

Check out Stanislas Wawrinka's tattoo in detail:

"It's my vision of my job and my life in general," Wawrinka said of his tattoo. "In tennis, as you know, if you are not Roger or Rafa and Djokovic or Andy now, you don't win so many tournaments and you always lose. But you need to take the positive of the loss and you need to go back to work."

Stanislas Wawrinka once faced a career of being Roger Federer's wingman. As a Swiss, he is the doubles partner for Federer. It is little known that Wawrinka is, in fact, an Olympic champion. He won gold with Federer at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The pair beat Sweden's Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson in the final.

The legendary John McEnroe remarked that Stanislas Wawrinka possessed he "the best one-handed backhand in the game today."

This backhand did come into use when he faced Rafael Nadal in the final game in Australian Open earlier this year. Quickly gathering many set points, Wawrinka dominated Nadal in a four-setter game. Wawrinka became the first player to defeat both Nadal and Djokovic in a single Grand Slam tournament.

Watch Stanislas Wawrinka's Australian Open speech here:

"I don't know if I'm dreaming or not," said the Swiss as he took the podium for the champion's speech at this year's Australia Open. Here's a man that really took the words "Fail Better" and the meaning of his tattoo to heart.
