The Amanda Knox murder case has taken a dramatic turn when her ex, Raffaele Sollecito, has petitioned the Italian high court to be tried separately. Lawyers believed that the "false confession" claimed by the convicted UW student will exonerate him.

In the past seven years, according to The Daily Beast, Raffaele Sollecito has stuck by his former lover throughout the whole Amanda Knox murder case trial. Their fates were also linked together such as their conviction in 2009, their acquittal in 2011 and their convictions reinstated in 2014.

"Each judgment has been motivated, in part, on the merit or weakness of Knox's so-called false confession and the subsequent accusation against Lumumba (Patrick, her former employer)," the website said.

This time, however, the legal team of Raffaele Sollecito has filed a 342-page document to petition the high court to judge him separately from the Amanda Knox murder case, particularly on the "false confession."

The document said that if Amanda Knox's confession about being at the scene when the crime took place (which she later retracted as false) really occurred, it actually cleared Raffaele Sollecito.

"It is clear from this document that Raffaele Sollecito was not present in the house on Via della Pergola where and when the crime was carried out," the legal counsels of Raffaele Sollecito wrote.

Meanwhile, lawyers asked Italy's Court of Last Resort last week to review the conviction of Amanda Knox on the murder of Meredith Kercher in 2007.

According to the report by the Associated Press, defense lawyer Luciano Ghirga filed the paperwork to the Court of Cassation, which is considered as Italy's highest criminal court.

Luciano Ghirga told the news wire agency that the Cassation judges-who will either uphold the conviction or order another trial-might study the case "late this year or in early 2015."
