K-Pop, B1A4 Under Fire In Malaysia Over Alleged Christian Agenda And Sexual Harassment

K-pop has come under fire in Malaysia due to a fancam that shows fans hugging B1A4 at a recent fan meeting in Kaula Lampur.

The video from January 10 showed B1A4 and several of the audience members embracing in a way that is not considered appropriate in traditional Islamic culture. The state religion of Malaysia is Islam, and the video showed women wearing traditional Islamic hair coverings.

Sukan Star TV, a Facebook page that shares things from around the Internet, shared the video on January 10, and entitled it "Malay Girls Molested on Stage by K-pop artists Last Night." The video then garnered over 10,000 comments within twenty-four hours as people reacted to the accusation. By January 12, the video had been seen over 1 million times on that Facebook page.

The video showed B1A4 and three fans reportedly reenacting famous Korean dramas. Although there was some hesitancy, the video shows the fans participating.

Over 25,000 comments on the video are in multiple languages. Some attack while others defend B1A4 and the fans for their behavior.

An NGO with political power in Malaysia known as ISMA, or the Malaysian Muslim Solidarity, published an article accusing K-pop artists of being secret missionaries. ISMA used many K-pop idols activities in their churches as proof, and alleged that nearly 80 percent of K-pop stars are devout Christians.

Christianity is prevalent in South Korea, and there are many K-pop singers who have spoken publicly about their religious practices.

TGM Events, the organizers of the B1A4 event, will have to meet with Communications and Multimedia Ministry officials due to the alleged molestation claims at the fanmeet.

The event organizers, TGM Events, issued a statement apologizing for offending people, and explained that they didn’t believe there was any sexual harassment at the event.

"We have been made aware of the attention that certain parts of the programme of the aforementioned event have been getting from certain media," the company stated.

"As an events organizer, we feel that it is our responsibility to clarify in explanation on the events that occurred out of respect to B1A4, their management and most of all, the BANAs who are the fans of B1A4."  TGM then outlined five points of clarification in their statement.

1. Fans were selected at random, based on questions that they posted on a message board with only their first name. The artist, artist management and organizer did not know who the selected fans were until they were brought on stage.

2. It is not part of standard protocol that K-pop artists would get up close and personal with fans. However, as this was a specialized fan meeting event, the programme was tailored towards fan engagement and interactivity. Before the event in question took place, the MC instructed the fans to not touch or get too close to the members of the group. Upon revealing of the parody clip to be acted out,the group members asked and clarified with the selected fans if they were uncomfortable with the activity. However, the fans gave consent on stage, in front of a live audience.

3. As a company run primarily by women, we do not and never will condone molestation or sexual harassment as alleged by the media outlet. The terminology used was taken out of context and it is extremely disappointing to us to witness an act of such irresponsible journalism.

4. We do not discriminate against any fan based on their race and religion. Therefore, our programmes are tailored to the preferences of our general target audience. It is not within our authority or jurisdiction to restrict fans from activties that they willingly partake in.

5. We do not condone online harassment. Therefore, we absolutely will not release any information on the fans involved. We believe in the protection of their privacy and their physical and psychological wellbeing.

TGM ended their ellaborate statement with an apology to those who may have been offended by the fan meeting events. "We apologize in all sincerity for the problems caused to the artist and their fans caused by these reports," they said. "In future events, we will take into consideration the cultural and religious implications of the interaction between fans and artists."
