Psy Cracks US Billboard Top 10 Despite Minimal Radio Airplay: "Gentleman" Jumps Into Number Five Spot Thanks To YouTube Views

Psy's new single "Gentleman" jumped into the number five spot on the Billboard Hot 100 this week on the strength of record-breaking YouTube views for the song's music video.

The song is number one on Billboard's Dance/Electronic chart.

"I couldn't be happier, although getting on the Billboard chart also makes me really grateful," Psy told UK publication the Guardian on Thursday before leaving for a U.S. publicity tour.

Up last week from number 12 on the Billboard Hot 10, "Gentleman," has already received over 223 million online views since being released on April 13, despite very little notice from U.S. radio disk jockeys.

"Gentleman" received 38 million YouTube views within the first 24 hours it was released, according to the Hollywood Reporter, breaking the record previously held by the phony doc "Kony 2012" which received 30 million views.

Psy, who already holds the record for the most watched YouTube video in history with the 1.5 billion views his previous single "Gangnam Style" received, made it into the record books again.

During that period, Psy's video was watched over 38 million times, decimating the previous record for most views in a single day held by the phony doc "Kony 2012" which received 30 million views.

"Gentleman" also cracked the Billboard's top 10 on the strength of its 72,000 downloads, a 165 percent increase from last week's numbers, despite receiving practically no radio airplay.

Billboard Magazine's Gary Trust laid out just how little support "Gentleman" has been receiving from U.S. radio on Wednesday.

"Without official radio promotion, 'Gentleman' is receiving only minimal airplay so far," Trust wrote. "Its 65 plays in the April 15-21 Nielsen BDS tracking week rank it at the lower end of the 100 most-played mainstream top 40 tracks in that span."

In other words, Psy's "Gentleman" received only 65 reported plays on U.S. radio nationwide for all of last week, despite being the number five song in the country.

Back in South Korea, Psy has been knocked out of the number one spot by longtime easy listening favorite Cho Yong-pil, whose hit song "Bounce" has taken over the top slot, according to daily and weekly charts on Naver, Korea's top internet portal.

The song remains number one on South Korea's GAON singles chart Popdust reported Thursday, despite being banned by television network Korean Broadcasting System (KBS).

KBS banned the "Gentleman" video last week for its portrayal of the defacing of public property.

The first scene in the video shows Psy kicking over a traffic cone.

"We strictly forbid any material that might disturb basic public order," read a KBS official statement, according to the Australian Associated Press.

The network claimed Psy's video breaks the state-run broadcaster's code of conduct and would be a bad influence on younger viewers.
