BTS and BlackPink on Fire

On June 4, Billboard showed to the public "The 50 Best Songs of 2019 (So Far): Staff Picks," in which two entries are from two popular Korean groups.

On the number 20 spot is BTS's "Boy With Luv" featuring American singer Halsey. One of the staff members, namely Bryan Kress, finds their collaboration as an "unstoppable crossover-pop force." He said that the lyrics are filled with BTS knowledge, as the boys develop from "the boy in love" to "the boy with love," but the song rewards the less-experienced listeners a compelling chance to admire what makes the group K-pop's biggest catch.

The song "Boy With Luv" is part of the boy band's latest EP "Map of the Soul: Persona," which was publicized on April 12, 2019. Its music video earned the title of "the most viewed online music video in 24 hours," with over 74 million views upon the day of its release.

In an interview, RM, the group's leader, talked about the meaning of the song. He explained that in 2014 they launched a song entitled "Boy In Luv," which is about young love, teen love, but this time in "Boy with Luv" they show that they grew up and so they sang about what true love is.

In addition to this, in a separate interview, RM said that the Korean title of their track is actually "A Poem for Small Things," and that they intend to have both titles together for the full meaning. The single is all about finding happiness from the small things in life.

Aside from BTS's song, BLACKPINK's "Kill This Love" takes the No. 50 spot on the Billboard. Nolan Feeney noted that the members of K-pop's ruling girl group don't just cut across language barriers with their highest-ranking U.S. hit, they destroy them.

The girls' "Kill This Love" is their second EP, released on April 4, 2019. It is the group's first Korean single since the release of Square Up in June 2018.

The music video of the lead single earned 56.7 million views in its first 24 hours. It then continued to hit 100 million views in less than three days. The track is one of the biggest music video debuts on YouTube, unseating Ariana Grande's "Thank You, Next," which reached 55.4 million views.

According to BLACKPINK Jennie, the song is about killing the toxic love that hurts us, let us become vulnerable, that weakens us, and to find ourselves within that love. It is also about finding what makes us confident and comfortable when we are in love."
