BBC Reports Sulli Outspoken in Conservative Soceity, “The woman who rebelled against the K-pop World”

The BBC described Sulli, a 25-year-old actress-singer a member of girl band f(x) who died after suffering from various rumors and cyberbullying, as "a woman who rebelled against the K-pop world."

The BBC reported the death of Sulli on Oct 17 (local time), who made the extreme choice. The article focused on the fact that Sulli receiving indiscriminate public criticism while making remarks on social issues in the K-pop industry that calls for idol groups to have perfect looks and respectful attitudes.

BBC states that "in an industry that rewards performers for their silence off stage, K-pop start Sulli was a rebel." And Sulli has spoken out about sensitive issues such as mental health issues, cyber-bullying, and women's rights in a conservative society like Korea.

As for the group f(x), which Sulli started her career as an idol, "f(x) is arguably one of the most musically innovative groups that K-pop has ever seen," said K-pop writer Joshua Calixto.

f(x) rejects stereotyped images that are required for female idols and is said to have shown unique melodies, lyrics, and stage performances.

Sulli announced a break from the entertainment industry, saying she was tired of malicious rumors and comments before officially quit the group in 2015.

The BBC said after this, she carried out an open romantic relationship banned by many K-pop management and became controversial with 'no bra,' which demands the right to be free to dress as pleased.

BBC states that what made Sulli stand out was her outspoken attitude, which is not common among K-pop stars.

It is also emphasized that the K-pop industry is famous for putting the pressure on idols to maintain a wholesome image.

Music critic based in Korea Yoonha Kim said, "Female K-pop starts are expected to be cute and lovely while being obedient to public reception. Sulli didn't fit this mould. She was the one who intentionally raised her voice and wanted to be heard."

Kim said, "She brazenly spoke out based on her own beliefs. These nonconforming, loud, and bold female stars have to risk their entire career to be who they are."

"To many of Sulli's critics, even something as innocuous as posting pictures [of herself] with her boyfriend was considered a controversial move," said Calixto.

According to police, Sulli was found dead at 3:21 p.m. KST on Oct 14 at her home in Gyeonggi Province. The police decided to conduct an autopsy with the consent of the bereaved families. On Oct 16, the National Institute of Scientific Investigation (NISI) delivered a verbal statement to the police saying that was no suspicion of external force or foul play.
