'Gangnam Style' Mayors Sued For Copyright Infringement [VIDEO]

Look across YouTube and you will see that "Gangnam Style" parodies are a dime a dozen. That's what happens when you get a catchy song like Psy's international hit and a silly, easy-to-do dance craze.

You Tube is about personal expression, and judging by a lot of the site's content, about making people laugh.

Four Danish mayors used the media site to upload parody versions of "Gangnam Style" where they talk about the economic difficulties faced by entrepreneurs in their respective cities.

Seems harmless enough - good meaning politicians using social media (and a bit of humor) to relate to their constituents and raise awareness of some political issues that mean a lot to them. Universal Music, however, sees it a much different way.

The copyright holders claim the Danish mayors took 'parody' a bit too far when they used the original song's track without permission. Universal also claims the politicians were attempting to further their political careers and bolster their approval ratings by using "Gangnam Style" and its immense popularity as a platform.

The mayors say that that was not their intention at all - they considered their video as a contribution to Psy's career and global success and contend they created a standard parody, plain and simple.

When the injunction was initially filed, Universal Music was seeking a total of $42,000 ($10,500 from each mayor) for the license to use the music in the video. They also offered a 24 hour deadline.

It seems that for now, we will just have to wait and see what become of this case, whether the Danish mayor will succeed in proving no harm, no foul - or if Universal will win on the side of the law on this one.

Watch the video below (with the altered soundtrack) to get a sense for the visuals and decide for yourself.

What do you think? Should parody videos be forced to pay for the copyright license?
