The New Face Of South Korea: Psy Broadcast Worldwide In Series Of 15-Second Tourism Ads Explaining Korean Culture [VIDEO]

The King of K-pop is now also the face of South Korea.

Psy will be featured in a series of six 15-second television commercials encouraging viewers around the world to come to South Korea.

"Psy is a cultural icon now," Charm Lee, CEO of the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), told the Korea Herald at a press conference on Monday.

"No one else has made as huge an impact as Psy...we expect to receive a lot of exposure with the new commercials."

Psy, who became the goodwill ambassador to the KTO earlier this year, elaborates on a different Korean word in each of the commercials, which will be aired on TV networks in Japan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.

Entitled "Psy's Wiki Korea," the commercials include explanations of banchan; Korean side dishes, cosmeroad; a street in the Myeongdong district in Seoul where many of the country's cosmetic brands have shops, Olle-gil; a scenic path on Jeju Island, bulgeum; an abbreviation for burning Friday--the Korean version of TGIF, Dongdaemun; a shopping center in Seoul and samgyeopsal; grilled pork-belly.

"We teach Korean words that symbolize unique Korean culture," explained Park Chul Hyun, the KTO's director of brand marketing.

"We hope the commercials enhance the image of South Korea and increase the number of tourists here in the coming summer."

Placed on 70 television stations worldwide in markets with the most tourism to South Korea, the "Psy's Wiki Korea" spots will air on the US networks CNN, Discovery Channel and National Geographic.

Lee says he hopes the ads will bring a basic knowledge of Korean culture to the international community.

"Like the Italian word 'pasta,' I hope everyone gets to know what 'samgyeopsal' is and know that the best way to cook pork-belly meat is how samgyeopsal is cooked," he said.

Another 21 subjects are covered in online video versions of "Psy's Wiki Korea," at www.ibuzzkorea.com, according to Sports Features Communications.

Psy reportedly shot the ads back in April.

"Psy introduces only some of the information and iconic concepts about Korea but Online, Internet users can share their favorite places, foods, or entertainment with other users," Lee said.

"We want people to share information about Korea online like they do with Wikipedia. Psy's Wiki Korea will be an encyclopedia for Korean tourism. We hope the ads will generate curiosity about Korea and ultimately make people visit the website to get more information about Korea."

Past tourism campaigns for South Korea have featured the K-pop acts 2PM and Miss A.
