Spotify Releases EQUAL X Spotify Singles With SUNMI In Celebration Of International Women’s Day

Spotify, the world's most popular audio streaming subscription service, released its first-ever EQUAL X Spotify Singles recordings to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8, with K-pop artist SUNMI participating as a representative of Asian artists. SUNMI presents her first new song of 2022, 'Oh Sorry Ya', to listeners around the world, exclusively on Spotify.

The EQUAL X Spotify Singles recordings come as part of Spotify's EQUAL initiative, which was instilled as a measure to uplift female artists and creators in the music industry, in combination with Spotify Singles, an exclusive program of Spotify that provides artists with the opportunity to record new versions of their own songs, the songs of the artist they love, or an original song. In addition to SUNMI's original new track, American singer-songwriter Ethel Cain and Mexican artist Bruses reveal EQUAL X Spotify Singles recordings, covering Britney Spears and Spice Girls, respectively. All three songs have been recorded, produced, and engineered solely by teams of women.

Co-produced by SUNMI herself and Los Angeles-based female songwriting duo LYRE, SUNMI's 'Oh Sorry Ya' catches the ears of listeners with a heavy, yet rhythmic baseline from the beginning. Unlike the serious story in the lyrics, 'Oh Sorry Ya' introduces the danceable retro-vibe that listeners can get lost into. 'Oh Sorry Ya' is an extension of 'Borderline', the sixth track of SUNMI's third mini-album '1/6', that talks about her story from deep inside her heart, dealing with the conflict between the old SUNMI and the new SUNMI. The vocals play a variation as if two SUNMIs have a conversation with each other, which presents many different sides of SUNMI at the same time.

"It's an honor to be part of this meaningful project on behalf of artists from Asia," SUNMI said. "The collaboration process with the female producer team LYRE was inspiring, and I am happy to present such a good result. I hope many people listen to this track."

"Spotify provided support in many ways throughout the project, helping SUNMI step forward as a global artist," said a spokesperson from SUNMI's label ABYSS COMPANY. "As SUNMI's label, we will continue to do our best to deliver 'SUNMI Pop' to a wider, global audience."

"SUNMI's path as a successful female solo artist and her unique take on the K-pop genre are in line with Spotify's EQUAL, which celebrates women's contribution in the music and audio space," said a Spotify spokesperson. "As a global leader in the audio and streaming industry, we are committed to fostering equality for women in music."

Meanwhile, Spotify has been making a wide range of efforts to amplify the voices of female artists and creators' communities across the globe since it launched the EQUAL campaign in 2021 - promoting gender equality and diversity in the global audio industry. In addition to introducing carefully selected songs performed by female artists through the 'EQUAL Global' playlist, Spotify has showcased a variety of Korean female artists and their music through 'EQUAL Korea' playlist for global listeners. Spotify also launched the 'EQUAL' hub, a one-stop destination for listeners to discover different types of music by influential female artists, encompassing genres such as K-pop, pop, rock, country, hip-hop, R&B, jazz, blues, electronic, fork, indie, and classical music.

SUNMI's 'Oh Sorry Ya' will be exclusively available on Spotify on March 8 at 2PM KST.
