When talking about the outstanding dance skills of female idols from the third generation of K-pop, Red Velvet usually gets mentioned as a group, but Irene by herself is rarely named. This has caused many to discuss whether SM Entertainment's popular visual has good dancing skills.

Recently, a topic that was posted to a Korean community forum attracted attention online.
The post included a fancam clip of Irene and the question, "Is Irene a bad dancer?"
Irene is famous for her visuals, and many claims her beauty has overshadowed her other talents, such as vocals, rapping and dancing. Many internet users shared differing opinions over Irene's dancing when the topic made its rounds online.

Some people claimed that Irene cannot dance. Others say that she is not bad, but she isn't excellent, either. People compared her to her co-member Seulgi, Red Velvet's main dancer. They claim that Seulgi dances with power as if it was second nature to her.
In comparison, Irene dances as if she was still learning how to dance.

However, others disagreed. Many believed that her body line was neat and attractive. Irene has the dance skills of a typical idol, and though she may not have the same level of skills as Seulgi, she was made the center of Red Velvet for a reason. Many claimed that she was the second-best dancer of Red Velvet, after Seulgi.
One user claimed that Irene reminded them of TWICE's Nayeon. Though both are not the main dancers, they are both in the dance line and are the center members of their group. Their skills are relatively close to one another, and their dance skills suit the choreographies of their respective groups.
