Review: Eco Bridge Struts His Stride Piano Chops In New Gospel-Inspired Single 'All of a Sudden One Day' [VIDEO]

If Beck decided to learn to speak fluent Korean and record an album of gospel-infused jazz originals, it would probably sound a lot like Eco Bridge's new single "All of a Sudden One Day."

Though one first glance he may seem to have little in common with the fashion sense or musical sensibility of indie pop's favorite "Loser," Eco exudes a laid back cool that, like Beck, makes his music sound appealingly stripped-down.

A skilled songwriter and pianist, Eco Bridge has a baritone vocal sound that is strikingly reminiscent of the American rockstar's work on ballads like "Nobody's Fault But My Own" or "Guess I'm Doing Fine."

Eco's singing style is laid-back with out being anemic or apathetic. He has ample power in his delivery without giving the impression of trying too hard.

Yet, unlike Beck, Eco's style is strongly rooted in American gospel and early jazz, particularly the stride piano of early icons like Jelly Roll Morton.

There are also traces of New Orleans pianists like Professor Longhair and his protégé Dr. John, particularly in the piano solo in "All of a Sudden One Day."

The rhythm section also has a New Orleans feel, but one closer to the hard funk of today.

Eco's choice of an upright bassist adds a pleasing authenticity to the track, and keeps it from ending up in fusion territory.

In fact, the entire band the songwriter assembled is impressive.

The organ adds sharply delivered punctuation to Eco's 1920s-era stride piano runs and the guitarist brings a bit of Bayou swamp funk of his own.

But what makes "All of a Sudden One Day," so enjoyable, beyond any one individual player, is simply how different the overall sound is from anything else on the Korean pop charts.

Debuting at number 73 on Billboard's K-Pop Hot 100 this week, the song is everything most of the songs ranking above it are not.

It's relaxed with a strong beat, relaxing without being boring and even features several solos.

In a genre dominated by hungry teen idols attempting to one-up each other with increasingly complicated vocal acrobatics and dance moves, it is refreshing to see grown men that play their instruments well, execute a song without much glitz or fanfare.

Unfortunately, it is exactly this originality that will likely keep "All of a Sudden One Day," from reaching the top 10.
