Review: Yong Jun Hyung Of BEAST, Ha Yeon Soo, BTOB Dial In The Cool Out Vibe In 'After Time Passes' [VIDEO]

If songs could be expressed in weather patterns, "After Time Passes" featuring Yong Jun Hyung Of BEAST, seven-piece K-pop boy band BTOB and Ha Yeon Soo would be a pleasantly warm summer night, hot but not too humid.

The song features a repeating figure on what sounds like a high-pitched flute or whistle (most likely it was played on synthesizer).

But whatever instrument produced the sound; it is one of those sonic textures that will immediately imbibe the listener with a feeling of relaxation.

Like the sounds of waves crashing or wind chimes, the sound of this recurring pitch, offers a soothing effect.

The remainder of the production of the song seemingly built around that high pitch sound that signifies that this is music to chill out to, is also tastefully done.

The studio musicians employ an impressive degree of restraint, supporting the song with minimalist flourishes that are so atmospheric they sound as if they came from the earth's outer atmosphere.

The guitar playing offers some nice, rhythmic comping, with traces of Nile Rodgers and other six-string masters of the dance floor groove.

Instead of adding something like the slap bass that often sabotages laid-back dance tracks with a 1980s feel, the bass player adds bare bones single-note support that is pitch perfect.

The drum sequencing "After Time Passes" is well mixed, creating a sound quality for the drums that is pleasing and musical-- it supports the overall composition well.

Instead of making the all-too-common production choice of hammering the listener with a big bass drum beat with little taste or originality, the producer favors a lighter touch that keeps the song towing the line of chillness.

The vocal performances from Yong Jun Hyung, Ha Yeon Soo and the members of BTOB are also tastefully restrained.

There are no "American Idol"-style vocal tricks, no wailing, angst-ridden pop pyrotechnics; instead the singing is just another layer of the track, helping to set that palpable feeling of a breezy summer evening.

Making dance music that is this relaxed and relaxing is no easy feat.

At any point in the making of "After Time Passes," one musician attempting to show off would have been all it took to ruin the track.

Fortunately for all of us, that didn't happen.
