On August 12, KBS Cool FM "Park Myung Soo's Radio Show" looked at this week's hot keyword with big data expert Jeon Minki. He prepared for the ranking of "5 Best Girl Groups." Prior to the announcement, Park Myung Soo asked:
"Isn't there a group that has been active recently and has been loved a lot?"
In response, Jeon Minki clarified that the rankings were based on big data, rather than popularity.
"You can think of it as rankings based on what has been mentioned a lot in big data, not in order of popularity."
He went on by naming 2NE1 as the fifth best and most-mentioned girl group by K-pop fans.
In 2022, the group sent the Korean music industry into a frenzy following their reunion after about seven years. CL, Dara, Bom and Minzy made a surprise performance at the Coachella 2022 where they sang their hit track, "I Am The Best," much to Blackjacks' (2NE1 fandom) delight.
Following the second-gen girl artist, another iconic group secured a spot in the top 5 - none other than the "Nation's Girl Group," Girls' Generation!
This year, the eight-member girl group reminded the K-pop scene of their status as one of the most legendary K-pop acts with a special release, "FOREVER 1." Their 11th full-length album was specifically dropped on August 5 to commemorate their 15th debut anniversary.
Following them, aespa ranked third, the sister group of the former under SM Entertainment. Although the quartet only debuted in 2020, they already cemented their influence and impact with consecutive hit tracks, "Black Mamba," "Next Level" and "Savage."
On July 8, they dropped its second mini-album, "Girls," and aside from the main track itself, their b-side "Illusion" is earning massive interest from K-pop fans.
Fourth-gen girl group IVE ranked second. The young girl group proves their power by being named one of the best girl groups less than a year since their launch in 2021.
Since debut, IVE has been steadily gaining numerous feats and achievements with their releases, "ELEVEN" and "LOVE DIVE."
On August 22, they are set to showcase their incluence once again as they herald a new single, "After Like."
BLACKPINK Crowned as Best K-pop Girl Group
Meanwhile, BLACKPINK was crowned as the best K-pop girl group, not by popularity but based on big data!
Since their debut, the quartet has been consistently showcasing their impact not only in the music scene but also in the fashion industry.
Aside from their influence through their songs, BLACKPINK is also lauded for being trendsetters, advocates and luxury brands' global ambassadors.
This August 19, the group is ready to conquer the world once again as they are set to make a comeback with a pre-release single, "PINK VENOM," their first release in 1 year and 10 months.
With their second studio album "BORN PINK," the quartet is also expected to prove their power as the "biggest girl group in the world."
