Two Months singer Kim Ye Rim made an interesting stylistic choice for the first single off of her debut solo album, released under the name Lim Kim.

The song forgoes the 1990s American boy band production so synonymous with K-pop, instead channeling the sound of seminal southern California indie bands like Shivaree and Giant Drag.

Best known for their 1999 track "Goodnight Moon," Shivaree has the same kind of endearingly dreamy vocals that Lim Kim employs in "COLORRING."

Kim's new single also has the childlike grace of Giant Drag singer Annie Hardy. The LA band is best known for their 2005 cover of the Chris Isaak song "Wicked Game."

And beyond just employing a West Coast indie rock sound, "COLORRING" possesses an almost country flavor with the offbeat chugs of clean electric guitar.

Yet the synthesizer flourishes keep the Lim Kim track from slipping into Nashville pop territory.

Created as a way for Kim to continue to create music while her Two Months bandmate Do Dae Yoon finishes her schooling, the full album is slated for release later this week.

Debuting at number 85 on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 this week, the South Korean music world appears to have not yet fully embraced the new sound on the Two Months singer's new single.

And considering how different "COLORRING" is from the other songs in the Hot 100, it is not surprising.

Yet, this is a mistake. There is a purity in the Lim Kim single that is a highly original choice.

What calls to mind the California indie bands mentioned above is more than just the beautifully innocent sound of Kim's voice, it is the fact that the song sounds like a band in a room playing.

A novel concept for sure, but in the digitally-dominated world of K-pop the sound of musicians playing off of each other, it is apparently not the top priority of many of South Korea's A-list producers.

With the innovatively sunny sound of "COLORRING," the rest of the album is a promising prospect.
